Becoming an influential Superintendent involves more than managing a district; it's about visionary leadership that challenges the status quo and transforms education that builds transcendent learning experiences for students. Key ingredients? 1. Deeply understanding your community's unique needs and assets; 2. fostering a culture of trust, vulnerability, and collaboration; and 3. committing to continuous learning and innovation through aligned systems. It's about advocating for every student's success, empowering teachers, and engaging families. Most importantly, it involves listening—truly listening with empathy—to the diverse voices and “street data” within your schools. Lead with empathy, courage, and a relentless focus on what's best for students, which may not always be best for the adults in your organization. This is how you can reduce college cost on a pathway program to skilled trades, short term training and stackable certificate to degree programs.

As our newest graduates enter the workforce, I want to share a friendly reminder (from an academic advisor) to check your transcript for program details. Employers should see the correct areas of study on your resume and on professional networking platforms — if and when they call your alma mater for verification, we will point out the error, which reflects poorly on the applicant with either a lack of attention to detail or an intentional effort to mislead the employer. Here’s a quick list: • Majors, minors, and concentrations are NOT interchangeable terms. (E.g., If your major is business and your concentration is real estate, you cannot claim to have earned a degree in real estate.) • Double majors are NOT equivalent to double or dual degree programs. Double and dual degree programs typically require at least 150 credits. • Note the correct graduation year and term, if you include the year at all. Graduating in Fall 2024 does not render you a graduate of the Class of 2024 at most institutions! Otherwise, you may have an inadvertent unemployment gap on your resume. If there is anything that workplaces need today, it is honesty across the board — from applicants to the C-suite. Understanding the evolving landscape of non-degree credentials is critical for workforce development. As the demand for non-credit programs grows, it's imperative that we ensure their quality and alignment with labor market needs. At the VCU Center for Corporate Education, we not only utilize labor market data to inform our program design but also integrate the latest research on teaching and learning to enhance the educational experience. The rise of non-degree credentials presents an opportunity to create flexible and accessible pathways for skill acquisition and career advancement. In addition to these considerations, we are acutely aware of the financial pressures on both learners and organizations. By focusing on robust quality indicators and evidence-based instructional methods, we can provide education that is both relevant and impactful while also being mindful of cost. The new FLSA rules, released on Tuesday, will significantly impact colleges and universities, particularly in areas like student affairs, residential life, IT, and academic advising. The financial implications of this shift could be substantial, necessitating an increase in labor costs or a reevaluation of how work hours and responsibilities are distributed among staff.   The timing of the rule's implementation poses an additional hurdle. Many colleges and universities already have fiscal year or biennial budgets, making it difficult to find room for these unexpected expenses. Institutions will need to either find ways to stretch their current budgets to meet these new requirements or potentially make cuts in other areas—a decision that could affect the quality of services provided to students.   In response to these new rules, universities and colleges must also comprehensively review their employment policies to ensure they remain in compliance. This may require significant administrative effort and careful legal consideration to navigate the complexities of the new regulations effectively.
