I’m SO excited to host Network While Black’s second event BLOOM: Separting Your Career From Your Identity on May 14th in NYC. Our inaugural event Network With Intention, was held in January. We brought so many amazing WOC (some men) together, and networked with people from all different fields. Bloom will be a little different. Although we are still emphasizing networking, on May 14th we will be discussing the importance of separating your career from your identity. This topic is very dear to me because as a Stylist in an unsure job market I’ve had to constantly ask myself what am I doing if I’m not working? I didn’t realize that because I’ve spent so much of my 20s chasing my career, that I didn’t know who I was when I wasn’t on set. This past year has been a whirlwind of emotions. Having a slow season in the industry forced me to think of myself as more than just a Stylist, and explore other interests of mine. Network While Black has been an amazinggggg venture for me, and I’m so thankful for this downtime because I was able to BLOOM. I now understand I am not my job, I am not my salary, and I am not just another Stylist. With that being said, be on the lookout for event details!!! Global Neighbors, Here is another Herculean effort to afford future generations to learn, and be educated, from within the community! First hand accounts, not filtered through someone else’s interpretation, or even banned, as to not seek truth-telling about peoples of African descent in the USA, during the period of chattel slavery. A VC fund dedicated to funding businesses run by Black women is not discrimination. The reason is that data show businesses run by Black women currently garner a tiny share of funding globally. This is not equitable. Hence, we need funds focused solely on funding underfunded groups in order to move towards equitable funding for all. This is one of the few ways we can end the actual discrimination happening which is against Black women. #racialequity #genderequity #VCbias

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and serves as a powerful reminder of the long struggle for freedom and equality in the United States. This historic day provides an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing issues of systemic racism and social justice, including the current state of mass incarceration. By acknowledging Juneteenth, we can foster a deeper understanding of how historical injustice, such as slavery and segregation, have evolved into modern-day disparities within the criminal justice system. This awareness can drive meaningful discussions and policy changes aimed at addressing racial biases, reducing incarceration rates, and promoting rehabilitation and reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals. Ultimately, Juneteenth can inspire collective action towards building a more equitable and just society.

The coronavirus pandemic caused a historic drop in Maryland’s prison population. But after the state of emergency ended and prisons filled again, the share of Black incarcerated people reached a five-year-high late last year, a Capital News Service data analysis has found. In March 2020, around 18,500 people were incarcerated in the state’s prisons. By summer 2021, there were almost 4,000 fewer prisoners. Never before had the state prison population decreased so dramatically in just one year. Since then, the prison population has swelled to more than 16,000 people as of last October — still significantly lower than pre-pandemic levels. Black inmates accounted for 72.4% of state prisoners in the last quarter of the fiscal year 2023, although Black people make up less than a third of Maryland’s population. The share of incarcerated Black people is up from 70% in the first quarter of fiscal 2018 and is higher than the 72% at the beginning of the pandemic, data by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services reveals.
