If any of this sounds familiar, you may have safety, quality, and retention problems at work: “The problem stemmed from the fact that a plant doesn't run well without continual investment in upgrades and maintenance. Decades-old machines were held together with quick fixes and running repairs, and the dies themselves were much the same. Thus, things would break down. They would break down a lot. Then, because they'd broken down, we wouldn't have made enough parts on a given shift. So to make up for the shortfall, the factory would then skip future maintenance windows in an attempt to catch up.”

Rivian Automotive CEO RJ Scaringe recently spoke on "Bloomberg Markets" about the company's efforts in bringing the new R2 model compact SUVs to market. While specific reservation numbers were not disclosed, Scaringe emphasized the team's dedication to meeting production targets despite the setbacks highlighted by the wider-than-expected loss reported in the first quarter. This development is crucial as Rivian continues to position itself as a significant player in the electric vehicle industry, navigating through production challenges and market expectations. #RivianAutomotive #ElectricVehicles #AutomotiveIndustry #MarketInsights #BloombergMarkets ---------------------- Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gygtJJxS

Rivian Automotive has secured an incentive package of $827 million from the State of Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to expand its electric vehicle (EV) plant in Normal, Illinois, #USA. The funding will enable Rivian to increase the capacity of the plant and produce R2, a midsized SUV. It will also be used for public infrastructure enhancements and job training programs for the company’s workforce. R2 is expected to offer a combination of performance, capability, and utility in a five-seat package. The EV plant in Normal began production in 2021 and has already manufactured over 100,000 EVs, including R1S, R1T, and commercial electric delivery vehicles. Rivian Automotive has invested over $2 billion in Normal and claims to have generated a value add of more than $3.9 billion to the local economy in three years. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker emphasized the positive impact of the investment on the electric vehicle ecosystem, the economy, and the state's ambitious climate goals. Graham Jarvis writes in TU-Automotive News: In October 2023 Autotech: Electrification in Detroit will also host a discussion on EV charging and infrastructure. It will specifically examine bans on the sales of new ICE powered vehicles due in 2035 given that there are moves in both the UK and the European Union to push back on these bans with the EU looking likely to allow ICE using carbon neutral fuels. However, not everyone was pleased to hear about UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s decision to change the UK’s previously promised ICE ban from its 2030 target. Ford UK chair and managing director Lisa Brankin comments in a Ford Motor Company press release: “The auto industry is investing to meet that challenge, and this is the biggest industry transformation in over a century and the UK 2030 target is a vital catalyst to accelerate Ford into a cleaner future. Our business needs three things from the UK government: ambition, commitment, and consistency. A relaxation of 2030 would undermine all three.” However, both JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) and Stellantis say the government’s decision will not affect their future plans. #2030 #engines #automotive #climate #internalcombustionengine #sunak #primeminister #autoindustry #target #iceban #electricvehicles #batteryelectric #hydrocarbons #hydrogen #powerplants #greenfuels https://bit.ly/3SeTK9k

Volkswagen Group and Rivian Announce Plans for Joint Venture to Create Industry-Leading Vehicle Software Technology. Volkswagen Group and Rivian intend to enter a joint venture to create next generation software-defined vehicle (SDV) architectures to be used in both companies’ future electric vehicles. Volkswagen Group to invest an initial $1 billion in Rivian, with up to $4 billion in planned additional investment for a total expected deal size of $5 billion Joint venture is expected to build on Rivian’s industry-leading software and electrical architecture to create best-in-class software-defined vehicle technology platform. The partnership is anticipated to accelerate the development of software for Rivian and Volkswagen Group. It is expected to allow both companies to combine their complementary strengths and lower cost per vehicle by increasing scale and speeding up innovation globally. Rivian’s proven in-market zonal hardware design and integrated technology platform are expected to serve as the foundation for future SDV development in the JV that will be applied to both companies’ vehicles. Rivian plans to contribute its electrical architecture expertise and is expected to license existing intellectual property rights to the joint venture. Both companies aim to launch vehicles benefitting from the technology created within the joint venture in the second half of the decade. In the short term, the joint venture is expected to enable Volkswagen Group to utilize Rivian’s existing electrical architecture and software platform. The partnership’s ambition is to accelerate Volkswagen Group’s SDV plans and transition to a pure zonal architecture. Each company will continue to separately operate their respective vehicle businesses. Oliver Blume, CEO of Volkswagen Group said: “Our customers benefit from the targeted partnership with Rivian to create a leading technology architecture. Through our cooperation, we will bring the best solutions to our vehicles faster and at lower cost. We are also acting in the best interest of our strong brands, which will inspire with their iconic products. The partnership fits seamlessly with our existing software strategy, our products, and partnerships. We are strengthening our technology profile and our competitiveness." RJ Scaringe, Founder and CEO of Rivian said: “We’re very excited to be partnering with Volkswagen Group. Since the earliest days of Rivian, we have been focused on developing highly differentiated technology, and it’s exciting that one of the world’s largest and most respected automotive companies has recognized this. Not only is this partnership expected to bring our software and associated zonal architecture to an even broader market through Volkswagen Group’s global reach, but this partnership also is expected to help secure our capital needs for substantial growth..” #partnership #softwareinvestment #jointventure #softwarestrategy #technology #industryleadingvehiclesoftware

#BREAKING: A big change afoot in the #Toyota lineup. The automaker is investing $1.4 billion into its assembly plant in southern Indiana to make an EV. But during questioning, the company says the plant's capacity isn't increasing, and the BEV in question will be chassis-based, not skateboard based. Which means that either the Toyota Sienna -- but more likely the Toyota #Highlander -- is going to be re-engineered into an EV in 2026 under the existing platform. You read it here first, folks. https://lnkd.in/euKu7-Rk

Listen to the Legendary Lutz In a recent interview legendary General Motors executive Bob Lutz said that auto execs wanted a gradual evolution … using hybrids as a step to pure EVs And offered detailed thoughts…. But before looking at that 👀 at the picture… he said electrification was inevitable 16 years ago!!?? An imperfect solution Lutz said hybrid vehicles are a “wonderful … in-between step” in the EV evolution. They have proven successful at transporting Americans for a range of 20 to 50 miles, using the electric part of the engine — which satisfies “most trips for most people,” Lutz pointed out. “And after that, you’ve got a gasoline engine and an internal combustion powertrain that’s going to take you on the rest of your trip and you never run out of electricity,” he added. “You can fill the [gas] tank in five minutes [and enjoy] all the wonderful advantages of internal combustion.” But there is one major drawback when it comes to hybrids: the cost of production (which almost always transfers over to consumers). “You’ve got an internal combustion drivetrain, a gasoline engine with all that entails, all the emission controls that are very expensive — and at the same time, you’ve got a lithium ion battery pack with all the control systems,” said Lutz. “It takes an incredible engineering effort to get the electric powertrain and the gasoline powertrain to work seamlessly together so [drivers] can’t tell whether one is operating or the other.” At the end of 2023, hybrid vehicles made up nearly 10% of new car sales, a proportion that’s more than doubled since 2020, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration Thoughts? Brian Mittendorf see info that 10% U.S. sales last year were hybrids…. Full article https://lnkd.in/gD77ZAe7
