The Resource Desert and the Hiring Decision Process   Control of Resources – Does the Position Have Control Each position (job) in an organization is created to deliver outcomes. Positions are designed that way. At least one can hope. Leadership positions contain more unknown and complex operational components (like other humans), and harder-to-define outcomes than doing jobs running production machines, driving a bus route, or wiring a building by following the construction diagrams. Let us describe the Control of Resources feature of the Resource Desert component of our Living Job Assessment™ any leader, manager, or supervisor faces that complicates the effort to deliver outcomes. Example: The outcomes the position is designed to produce require human talent to get them. An analysis, approved by HR and senior management, determines the need at 2.0 FTE. Can the leadership position apply to HR and post the job, conduct the search, interview, do background checks, assess the cultural fit, negotiate the money, and make the hiring decision? That would be total control. Does the position need permission from someone higher up the food chain? What if the answer is no? What happens next? Oh, I remember, the person in the leader position is still required and held accountable to deliver the results – and if they fail – well that will be a blemish on their record. The reason for this everyday vignette is to expose this idea – way back during the development of the job description, companies fail to identify the Resource Desert the position will have to overcome. Because it is never identified, the search never includes looking for the skills that will make someone capable of dealing with it. To make matters even worse, the candidates who apply and interview have no idea the Resource Desert exists, and to what extent it can hamper their enthusiasm for taking the position, or their success once they have accepted. Finally, though with a healthy dose of irony, the company fails to calculate if the Resource Desert would effectively preclude achieving the desired results – a calculation that renders everything that follows the hiring process ineffective and sets everyone up for disappointment and failure. We'll work to answer these questions: 💡What can we provide learners with that serves as proof in the workforce economy and marketplace that they earned and can effectively apply the skills they have acquired, and what can employers, workforce development organizations, and hiring managers look for to have confidence in job seeker skills from credible educational institutions and organizations, even if they're not 2 or 4 year universities? 💡 How can we have confidence that resumes accurately depict the skill-level and competencies of job seekers and employees? If they don't, what can we do about it? 💡 How might we fill critical roles by tapping into new talent pipeline sources where skill level is advanced and credible, and learners have digital assets to prove it? 💡 (How) Do microcredentials like digital badges help us overcome talent pipeline hurdles, or do they still seem like a flashy logo-like .jpg that only serve to gamify learning and motivate learners to complete a program? Do you know what the most successful and sustainable organizations often get right? I’m not talking about strategy, vision, or personnel… Don’t get me wrong, those things are essential. I’m not arguing they aren’t. There’s another critical component that contributes to whether an organization reaches its vision or not. I’ve served as CEO of an organization that tripled revenue, executed 20+ M&A’s, and grew into new global markets. We had a well-defined strategy, a clear vision, and excellent people in the organization. With all that said, do you know what was one of the biggest drivers of sustained growth and success? Patience. The #1 reason companies abandon well-designed strategies is a lack of immediate results. Without immediate results, stakeholders can get nervous and when that happens, well-designed strategies can get abandoned. The funny thing is, you’re actually likely to achieve more when you act in alignment with an effective strategy. You’re likely (not guaranteed) to be better off in the long run, but it takes more time. So how can leaders instill patience in their organizations to see these strategies through?
