If any of this sounds familiar, you may have safety, quality, and retention problems at work: “The problem stemmed from the fact that a plant doesn't run well without continual investment in upgrades and maintenance. Decades-old machines were held together with quick fixes and running repairs, and the dies themselves were much the same. Thus, things would break down. They would break down a lot. Then, because they'd broken down, we wouldn't have made enough parts on a given shift. So to make up for the shortfall, the factory would then skip future maintenance windows in an attempt to catch up.”

Can you guess which automaker has the most sophisticated over-the-air software update capability in the United States market as of 2024? The answer is Ford Motor Company, whose #OTA capability as demonstrated on the Mustang Mach-E exceeds every other automaker selling vehicles with the capability in the United States today. While #Tesla and #Rivian update their vehicles more frequently and with more content overall, Ford’s ability to update the car while the vehicle is in use represents a novel capability that we’ve seen no other automaker employ on the road in the United States – and they’re quickly catching up in cadence, too, thanks to broad availability of their capability across all brands and powertrains. Ford made an active design choice to equip vehicle electronics with “A/B” partitioning, allowing software updates to be installed silently, then “switched over” to the newly updated partition without an interruption to the vehicle’s functionality. Laying the technology foundation that Ford has is a crucial step in enabling the long-term vision of the software-defined vehicle, and we’re now seeing the fruits of sizeable investments in development tools, organizational changes, and architecture overhauls give the company the opportunity to meet or even leapfrog the agility of their #EV competition. For more information on this ranking and methodology, refer to our quarterly OTA and Software-Delivered Features Guide, which also tracks every known software update pushed by every automaker in the United States, Europe, and China: https://lnkd.in/gq5ce2TK

Listen to the Legendary Lutz In a recent interview legendary General Motors executive Bob Lutz said that auto execs wanted a gradual evolution … using hybrids as a step to pure EVs And offered detailed thoughts…. But before looking at that 👀 at the picture… he said electrification was inevitable 16 years ago!!?? An imperfect solution Lutz said hybrid vehicles are a “wonderful … in-between step” in the EV evolution. They have proven successful at transporting Americans for a range of 20 to 50 miles, using the electric part of the engine — which satisfies “most trips for most people,” Lutz pointed out. “And after that, you’ve got a gasoline engine and an internal combustion powertrain that’s going to take you on the rest of your trip and you never run out of electricity,” he added. “You can fill the [gas] tank in five minutes [and enjoy] all the wonderful advantages of internal combustion.” But there is one major drawback when it comes to hybrids: the cost of production (which almost always transfers over to consumers). “You’ve got an internal combustion drivetrain, a gasoline engine with all that entails, all the emission controls that are very expensive — and at the same time, you’ve got a lithium ion battery pack with all the control systems,” said Lutz. “It takes an incredible engineering effort to get the electric powertrain and the gasoline powertrain to work seamlessly together so [drivers] can’t tell whether one is operating or the other.” At the end of 2023, hybrid vehicles made up nearly 10% of new car sales, a proportion that’s more than doubled since 2020, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration Thoughts? Brian Mittendorf see info that 10% U.S. sales last year were hybrids…. Full article https://lnkd.in/gD77ZAe7

It's not just #Toyota. Many legacy car manufacturers are having a lot of trouble adapting to the new reality. Most are losing money making EVs and then we magically see articles about how people don't want EVs. Really? #Tesla and more importantly, #BYD is stealing sales from everyone. The speed at which they have been innovating is tremendous. Only protected markets can allow some other companies to survive. If the whole world markets were open, they would decimate them all. I believe the small slowdown in sales for #Tesla is more about purchasing power drop among US consumers and will revive next year. Plus, they also have new vehicles coming, hopefully a cheaper one and a Robotaxi. And yes, adopting of Full Self Driving (FSD) will only grow faster with v12.5.1 having just gone out to consumers. Automobiles (Cars, Trucks in this case) are not gonna be the same anymore.

Interesting chart showing repair costs of *major components* in EVs. The big question: If the average person owns a vehicle for 8-years, how will these costs compare to an ICE vehicle? via Investopedia Automakers General Motors and Stellantis are getting almost $1.1 billion in grants from the White House to convert “at-risk” plants into electric vehicle related production facilities, the U.S. Department of Energy said Thursday. The funding is part of $1.7 billion in total allocated for the conversion of 11 such plants across eight states, which the DOE expects to lead to the retention of 15,000 existing union jobs and the creation of nearly 3,000 new ones. Rivian CEO Claims R2 And R3 Will Be Different Than Most EVs Rivian is certainly emerging as one of the top new players in the world of electric mobility. The upcoming Rivian R2 and R3 electric SUVs will be distinct in comparison to their rivals, claims Rivian CEO, RJ Scaringe. With the rise of EVs, we have been witnessing countless new players emerging from all corners of the globe. However, I can’t think of too many successful car marques apart from a select few. Rivian definitely belongs to the latter. At present, the R1T and R1S are doing decently on the sales charts. But to cater to a much wider customer base, relatively affordable EVs like the R2 and R3 are necessary. https://lnkd.in/gBUcvWgX

I came across an old article called "Artificial Organs" by Dick Arconti and Henry A. Pace. It describes how Goodyear "became interested in applications for rubber in the medical field. A paper entitled 'Artificial Organs Based On Rubber' was given at the International Rubber Conference in 1967 by R M Pierson, M V Mathis, J I Wright, D L Gardner and A F Finelli... In the paper, discussion on Goodyear's work with the Cleveland Clinic and Akron City Hospital on heart valves, arteries, replacement artificial hearts and booster type artificial hearts were presented" I couldn't find this article, or many things related to this topic online. I did find that Goodyear had developed a rubber trademarked Hexsyn, which had "extremely hi flex and which was also bio-compatable". This new material allowed the Cleveland Clinic to eventually implant a total artificial heart in a calf, which sustained the animal for 145 days. The Hexsyn rubber was later transferred to the Lord Corp. I did find that this rubber is still used today for medical purposes. If anyone can find more information about this, please leave comments down below. Here are some links that I found mentioning the research. "Cleveland: Pioneer in Cardiac Care": https://lnkd.in/g-VAKmM8 "The Cleveland Clinic-Nimbus total artificial heart": https://lnkd.in/gYp_PFBr Exerpt from the Nimbus heart article linked above: "The blood-pump housings are made of a carbon fiber epoxy composite material. The diaphragms are compression molded from Hexsyn rubber, a high-flex-life polymer developed by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. Akron, Ohio. Hexsyn rubber has been used for pump diaphragms and other components for TAHs and left ventricular assist devices for more than 15 years. Quick Spin: Ford Bronco - a cool SUV crying out for a better powertrain "When you own a Tesla Model 3 Performance hammer, every IC vehicle drives like a nail." I have to admit I'm spoiled, our M3P drivetrain is absolutely outstanding, and it consistently shines a light on just how bad the driveability and efficiency of ICE powertrains really are. None more so than on this Ford Motor Company Bronco my wife had for a Turo rental last week while I was in Michigan. This one had the 2.3L Ecoboost, and I presume the 7 speed auto, and it's a bit of a dog. Not smooth, not that strong and often in the wrong gear. It's also, quite unsurprisingly, very heavy on fuel, even with the smallest available wheel package. It's absolutely crying out for a Mustang Mach E or F150 Lightning all electric powertrain. Aside from that, the Bronco IS a cool looking truck, especially with the roof dropped. Are we comparing apples and oranges here? Certainly they're very different vehicles. However, after spending time in the (even larger) Kia Canada EV9 and Rivian R1T last month, you realize just how good it COULD be. While a lot more expensive than a base Bronco (but less than a Bronco Raptor), the R1T destroys the Bronco in every measurable way, off road ability included. The only exception? No soft top on a Rivian. And what about the vehicle's owner? His daily driver is a Mustang Mach E. Ford Management: Please make the Bronco electric! Have you noticed just how bad IC vehicles really are after driving electric for a while? Let me know your experience in the comments below #automotive #batteries #climatechange #electricvehicles #innovation #sustainability #cleanenergy #renewableenergy

It's a fact: manual transmission vehicles are becoming increasingly rare in America. Despite the impressive advancements in automatic transmissions like Porsche’s PDK system, many of us still cherish the tactile experience of shifting gears ourselves. Although most modern drivers favor automatic transmissions for their ease of use, there was a time when a variety of unique transmission setups were commonplace. In this post, we explore some of these distinctive transmission systems and the reasons behind their development.
