Please take a moment to look at these stats on Women in Industrial Design... It's incredibly important to recognize that ID is a field almost as male dominated as engineering is and it's even more important to learn about the steps we can take to make the filed more equitable Top 3 facts that stood out to me: 1. 51% of ID grads are women, but women only make up 28% of Industrial Designers     2. The percentage of women in ID has decreased from 30.77% in 2010 to 18.6% in 2021     3. Throughout my career, I've been a huge advocate of a "pencils before pixels" approach to design. When a stakeholder asks me about my preferred design tool, I answer with "research, followed by concept evaluation." Lower-fidelity wireframes and sketches are often overlooked (or actively avoided) by Stakeholders, Product Managers, Developers, and even, sadly, many Designers. With so many visual design tools and design-to-code systems available, it's easy to get excited by the visual polish of a high-fidelity prototype. But I've found that clients who really understand the problems they're trying to solve - and who are willing to evaluate potential solutions before jumping into development - end up seeing the design role as being far more valuable to their business in the long-term. As Pavel Samsonov writes: "the biggest value of design is not delivering a thing faster. It’s delivering the right thing faster." Real design value comes from identifying and creatively solving problems, not just cranking out beautiful screens. https://lnkd.in/e5fq55qV

After reading Kara Swisher's "Burn Book," (which I HIGHLY recommend for anyone working in tech), I started thinking more about how digital designers can actualize responsible design techniques in their day-to-day practice. John Payne's lecture, "How to Work Responsibly with Emerging Technologies" (on EPIC People's website) is really an outstanding and inspiring resource. He reminds us of the unintended consequences of launching MVPs at scale, and how we might shift our thinking and practices to mitigate unintended effects. One method, creating a Narrative Map, was an especially fun exercise that John shared. My team and I thought about that in relation to transportation -- the Jetsons and Mad Max as examples of fictional utopian and dystopian vehicles. Both the vehicles and their environments tell very different stories about humanity. Designers -- how are you thinking differently about your practice than you did 5 years ago? What methods and tools are you using to practice responsible design?

I'm a creative and I think the ad is great. They incorporated an extremely popular type of video and were able to trigger an emotional response. Why is this good? Because you will remember it. Hydraulic presses crushing things gets a lot of views on YouTube and they turned it into a memorable advertisement. We packed all of this into the thinnest form factor yet! There is a lot of eye candy as things explode. The objects are meaningful, which creates an uneasy feeling, (emotion = remembered). They reinforce that feeling with the foam emoji ball right at the end 😳 When you're working on your next project, how can you trigger an emotion to help people remember it? It doesn't have to be an advertisement. You can use this for presentations or to help sell your idea.

This feels like sensationalist click bait... or did I miss something Ron Fritz 1. Isn't this basically a HOOPs demo app? Is this a change in status quo?Techsoft already effectively provides many examples/apps, and it seems like they will just provide even more and license them out so people can hit the ground running faster. I would think that software engineering firms provide value by gluing together more than a couple of well known libraries. The article also mentions other up and coming libraries that further show this accessibility bar is changing. Shouldn't we make CAD import and visualization more ubiquitous? If this helps make CAD BREP data a standard low bar for software vendors, I think that actually helps the industry. 2. How is this like Carta? Carta monetized and sold inside information without consent of the people who gave that information. Techsoft made a press release. They seem to be transparent about their motivations and goals. Of course any company that licenses something/provides a platform has special information that would aid in M&A. That's the basis for vertical integration moves and in this case what feels like consolidation. It seems more like people can't easily sell a "flashlight app" anymore. 3. Who actually cares about this? Techsoft is in a natural symbiosis with the companies it works with. It won't compete against any major CAD players because it would causes issues with the licensing of the CAD formats. It doesn't make sense to compete against anyone providing real value beyond connecting a few libraries together because they would lose their user base. The parasolid model has nominally worked well. Maybe I missed something, or I'm missing a perspective. I'm happy to not make any real strategic decisions about writing my own CAD importer. There are more interesting problems to concentrate on.
