The afternoon Keynote @ Stripe Sessions was Fireside Chat between Patrick Collison (CEO of Stripe) and Jensen Huang (CEO of NVIDIA). Patrick was an excellent moderator — asked Jensen really probing, nuanced questions that Jensen answered with his usual sharp wit and unique (and impressively well rationalized) perspective. A couple of quotes among many that stuck with me: - “Current CPU installed market is $1 trillion of hardware, all of which will be upgraded to GPUs over the next 5 years. And I would estimate about another $1 trillion will be spent on top of that during the same time period as companies try to do more with AI. Add those together — and I think at least $2 trillion will be spent on GPUs in the next 5 years.” - “I like to go after Zero-Billion Dollar Markets — nonexistent markets that I envision & can rationalize well, but will be very hard, expensive & time-consuming to achieve.”

It’s exciting to witness how the hyperscalers are enabling a hyper-collaborative marketplace ecosystem that allows the multiplication of revenue opportunities. I see this happening in two ways 1️⃣ ISVs are being encouraged by hyperscalers to build with interoperability in mind 🔧 All three #hyperscalers have, over the course of the last few years, incrementally deepened their partnerships with on-page "competitors" like Salesforce and Snowflake to break data silos and leverage #GenAI on more comprehensive data sets. AWS, GCP and Azure are not just strengthening their own associations, but they are also actively encouraging collaboration between these ISVs to drive interoperability, aimed at the creation of joint solutions that significantly expand the universe of customers who can benefit. Snowflake’s most recent Polaris Catalog launch also reaffirms its commitment to interoperability with a wider library of industry players (beyond the three clouds) including hyperscaler partners like Salesforce and Confluent. That brings me to point 2…. 2️⃣ Hyperscalers are actively inviting the participation of channel partners to piece complementary solutions together 🤝 As ISVs focus on creating compatible offerings with each other, and with hyperscaler services, buyers have the opportunity to find end-to-end solutions for specific use cases right from the marketplace catalog. To do so, they’re relying on partners to identify, connect and manage these increasingly complex technologies. This presents a tremendous opportunity for channel partners to add value to these marketplace-led deals by helping piece solutions together into a comprehensive whole. Hyperscalers are also cognizant that the “channel is the glue between them and the lower enterprise, midmarket and SMB,” as I’ve hear my friend and founder of Ultimate Partner Vince Menzione put it, and are actively developing strategies to incorporate channels into marketplace deal workflows. There’s a clear signal to shift the perception of marketplaces from being potential threats to traditional partnership associations, to what they really are – growth opportunities. Channel partners who recognize this sooner rather than later, have biggest opportunity to capture net new business.

Last month I met with Andy Serwer, Editor at Large at Barron's, for coffee.  As usual, we discussed a wide range of topics, both professional and personal.  While no conversation in Silicon Valley is complete without #AI, I suspect Andy is beginning to tire of it, given the number of tech gurus he meets with every week! However, we did discuss AI’s effect on the #sustainability of technology, an issue we should certainly elevate. Most people assume that existing data centers are entirely based on modern technology. Not so. Over 80 percent of digital information in data centers still sits on spinning mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs). This energy-intensive technology, celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, requires enormous amounts of power, cooling, and space, and creates significant e-waste.  What other technologies invented in the 1950s are still around today in their same form?  Pure DirectFlash can save upwards of 20% of existing data center power and space for similar cost.  Why are we not doing this?

The engineering team at SaaSGrid pumps out features faster than I can write about them, but I wanted to highlight one thing we released recently that has made a big impact for our customers. SaaS leaders are used to looking at monthly ARR, but that can leave them in the dark to the day-in-day-out changes in their customer base. Are new customers getting signed? Are renewals happening (and happening on time?) Is there organic expansion or contraction? Our new ARR Movements timeline gives day level granularity for every change in ARR, down to the specific products and quantities that were updated. Keeping track of data in real time lets our users move from reactive proactive, and never get surprised at the end of the month. I’ve been looking at how startups can compete with the Big 3 cloud providers. While they’ve been humbled by NVIDIA’s rise to become the central power broker in today’s ecosystem, they’ve pushed back hard to build their edge in AI. That’s created huge opportunities for a handful of startups, and stiffer competition for everyone else. But there are still areas where startups can build value in the AI stack. They just have to approach competition a little differently than before. In this “Big 4” era of AI cloud, everybody needs everybody: NVIDIA has the chokehold on GPUs and recently entered the cloud provider market, the Big 3 still win on cloud computing and distribution resources, but startups have the agility and speed to actually innovate us to the next phase of the AI shift. This has changed the nature of incumbent + startup partnerships, funding patterns, GTM, and exit strategies in the process. In a new essay with my colleague Jason Risch, we outline where startups have the advantage, which areas are already saturated, and areas where we believe incumbents are most likely to win. Many will agree that LLMs and compute are largely spoken for, but there is ample opportunity in devtools and infrastructure; vertical and horizontal apps; codegen, robotics, and, of course, security. These observations come through our daily work and from our ongoing data collection and analysis for our Castles in the Cloud project.
