Developmental edits are back! On Monday, Hannah de Keijzer returned my edited manuscript: ▶️ 11 page revision letter ▶️ Comments added in the doc to illustrate points from the letter and point out text-specific concerns Ooof! 😳 I was pleasantly, and excitedly, slightly overwhelmed with the amount of feedback and information. She did a phenomenal job. I could see the attention to detail and commitment she gave my manuscript. (Thank you, Hannah! 😊 ) Three main themes: ▶️ Center the reader—their concerns, experiences, and what they need to know ▶️ Smooth transitions and add context ▶️ Reassess author examples I reviewed it all (the holes in my logic, gaps identified, and biases overlooked, etc.) with an open mind. This part is and should be painful. A good editor should push and challenge. Rework this. Restructure that. Rebuild this entire part. Of course, you should enjoy working with your editor, but you should also feel slightly pissed at them for calling you out and asking you to bring forth your best work. (Thanks again, Hannah! 😉 ) I let it sit for a day. Then, dove in yesterday. And today, I’m having a nice solid sit with it. Stomachs full. Papers and notes are out. Espressos hot. Water jugs full. I was reminded of this article as I don't want authors to disappear and write their books in a vacuum. Batches of chapters with regular feedback make for much better books, and it means authors get my input sooner rather than later. It's much quicker and simpler to rewrite one chapter than a whole book so use your editor and don't be shy to ask for feedback. https://lnkd.in/epTZw73x #businessbooks #manuscript #authorcoach #editing

Ok, time for the fifth day in a row of FREE new research articles of mine. This article came out online first a few weeks ago, but it costs money to download if your institution does not have access. However, thanks to Purdue e-Pubs yesterday, it is now a free article to download. There is a narrative that book banning and censorship are supported by those of faith. This is not true. After reading the latest update from #UniteAgainstBookBans, I am so impressed with religious communities' work to stop censorship. From the update: "A new resolution from the Episcopal Church encourages members to advocate within their local contexts not only in opposition to book bans, but to include diverse and affirming books in church libraries as well as to preserve the history and experiences of the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ faithful." From ancient clay tablets to TV shows to video games, the U.S. Library of Congress preserves far more than just books https://lnkd.in/g7wQ_Cg7 #libraryofcongress The world’s oldest known library, the Royal Library of Ashurbanipal, in what is today Iraq, was created in the seventh century B.C.E. to store clay tablets used for recordkeeping. Its librarians preserved 30,000 of them—including the 4,000-year-old Epic of Gilgamesh. And Egypt’s Great Library of Alexandria acquired an enormous collection: In the third century B.C.E., the law required travelers arriving at the city’s bustling seaport to hand over any books in their possession to library scribes, who would return a copy of the book to the owner and keep the originals. Such texts helped make the library a beacon of knowledge and learning in the ancient world. Today the U.S. Library of Congress continues the tradition of conserving knowledge with one of the largest library collections ever compiled.
