Have you ever thought about how compliance laws are a lot like design systems? I recently spoke with Joe Toscano, founder of DataGrade, and he made a fascinating comparison. Joe explained how Brad Frost's atomic design methodology took an engineering approach to design: → Creating standardized elements → Templatizing them → Scaling them across a system This led to the rise of human interface guidelines (HIGs) from tech giants like Google, Apple, and IBM. But here's where it gets really interesting: Joe argued that privacy laws and regulations are like the ultimate HIG for product design. Just like how HIGs provide rules and constraints for design systems... Compliance laws set guardrails for what we can and can't do with user data. If we design something that isn't compliant, it doesn't matter how sleek the UI is. Legal requirements become the top-level framework we have to design within. That's what got Joe into studying laws - to understand this new "design system" for building products. So next time you're cursing a lengthy legal doc or trying to make sense of GDPR... Let's talk Design Systems Tokens and the nomenclature of how we approach the naming of our semantic aliases. Repeat after me: "We do not need to make things complicated." 👏 Design Tokens are a guiding compass that leaves a trail of breadcrumbs for others to follow when we are not present. Design Systems allow us to channel that communication pipeline that enables us as Design Systems Operators to bridge that gap between dev, design, and any blockade in between. Frictionless communication begins when we create effective semantic aliases that don't muddy the water of our creations, and keep things simple. Easy to interpret and read. Context based. Smart. Decisive. Digestible. 007 - also known as James Bond. Alias to Semantic. Can be an analogy that is example how we can chunk lamens speak for tokens, in how we need to start developing that inner intuition that will guide us in our design decision making when we become architects of our products craft. Intuition that guides our craft via simplicity. Tokens should be easy to pickup and take from one point of the design lifecycle and place in another area that can be traced back to its origin point. Hence anchoring things to an alias to kill two birds with one stone. Our alias allows us to expand our token into multiple areas touching 2,3,4,5 components erm; areas - all at once.

Here's a great video on graphic design's different ebbs and flows. my favorite part is when Chris Do mentions that when good designers learn the tools and take over from software 'operators', things get good for them in our industry. I recommend watching it and figuring out for yourself what tool you will take over from today's operators, such as prompt engineers, to succeed in the future.
