As we detailed in last week's Fitt Insider newsletter, the gyms-as-clinic model is gaining traction — and Equinox isn't alone in implementing the playbook. — Partnering with InsideTracker, FITNESS SF is making healthspan diagnostics a membership option. — Extending its services, Life Time Inc. launched longevity clinic MIORA for weight loss, HRT, and peptide therapies. — Enlisting clinicians, Austin’s Kollective, LA’s Monarch Athletic Club, and SportsRehabLA pursue high performance through continuous care. For now, gymgoers seek fitness, holistic health, and preventative care in separate places. Filling a void, gyms are poised to become lifestyle medicine hubs.

The women within the Fit Tech community have raised concerns regarding the scarcity of research focusing on women, their bodies, health, and performance. As a lifelong soccer player, I've witnessed a persistent issue among female soccer players: ACL tears. Explained below are two research studies - here's the TLDR: - Female soccer players are 2-6x more likely to tear their ACL than men. - Female soccer players are 6 times more likely to sustain injuries in the days preceding their menstrual cycle. Is anyone tying the two studies together? I sure hope so! Study 1: Last week, FIFPRO introduced Project ACL, a three-year research endeavor aimed at addressing the significant increase in ACL injuries within women's professional football. This is just kicking off. The Guardian revealed that ACL tears are disproportionately common among female footballers, occurring between two and six times more frequently than in their male counterparts. Project ACL is looking at academic research, real-time tracking of workload, travel, and appearances through a monitoring tool, and environmental influences that could pose an injury risk. Project ACL is a collaborative effort involving FIFPRO, England’s Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), Nike, and Leeds Beckett University. Although the primary study will center on England’s Women's Super League, the findings are promised to have global reach. Here's the thing. Either the article just didn't specify it, or they are missing something. There is a fundamental difference between men and women - hormones. Study 2: The Times posted yesterday that according to research, female soccer players are six times more likely to sustain injuries in the days preceding their menstrual cycle. Researchers from UCL and the University of Bath tracked professional footballers in England’s Women’s Super League over three years. The study, which focused on players from an unnamed club, documented 74 injuries among 26 players across three seasons. Typically, we categorize health into movement, nutrition, and sleep/recovery. Women have an additional layer of complexity (or as Hélène and the Wild.AI team refer to it, a superpower). Menstrual cycles. Hormone fluctuation. Hormones can be used as a strength, but without a solid understanding and proper adjustment, they can increase the risk of injury.

Here is an excerpt from Golden Gate Mothers Group ‘s most recent April/May magazine “Craze”, featuring a mention of Custom Fit! Sasha Fahimi writes, “I became curious and sought out [evidence based precision medicine] resources in San Francisco. When I met Evan Mather, founder of Custom Fit, a local gym that offers personal training and individualized nutrition coaching, I realized Jahan was not alone in his quest to improve his health by using data. Evan is a believer in DEXA and VO2 max testing, describing them as “two highly researched body composition and cardiorespiratory analysis tools that allow us to assess a client’s baseline, guide recommendations, and build the most personalized plan one can ask for.” DEXA is an incredibly precise measure of body composition, helping measure bone density, lean muscle mass, and body fat, including the proportion of visceral fat— the fat on the inside that you can’t see-which is especially harmful to internal organs and is associated with development of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. While users of Ozempic will see a reduction in their visceral fat (likely driving much of the health benefits), doctors warn that a significant amount of the overall weight loss can come at the cost of lean muscle mass, an unintended consequence that can be tracked by DEXA and reversed with appropriate training and diet interventions. VO2 max, on the other hand, measures your cardiac and respiratory fitness. Evan describes it as assessing “how much oxygen (V = volume) you’re able to uptake under maximum effort, and as well as help determine your different heart rate zones for training.” While the idea of running full speed on an incline on a treadmill until I’m maxed out sounds terrible, it turns out your VO2 max actually may predict how long you live. “VO2 max declines gradually with age, and people with higher VO2 max have better heart and lung health and, on average, live longer and more independently,” my husband explained … When I went in for my own DEXA scan, I noticed that Custom Fit was much more than your average gym. Evan and his team offer nutrition consultation, bloodwork packages, cold plunge, infrared sauna, and the like…” Are you familiar with the benefits of VO2 Max testing and DEXA scanning?

Would you pay your employees for getting good sleep? Should you? It might seem crazy, and in this case, part of a marketing ploy by Whoop, but.... .. they are not the first company to do this! Just one other notable example of #sleepleadership : Almost a decade ago, the American health insurance company Aetna, already had such a policy. They paid workers who got at least 7 hours of sleep 20 nights in a row $25 per night. Up to $500 a year. Keep in mind: a health insurance company is well positioned to run the numbers: They KNOW how much they gain by people getting better sleep. And it's easily much more than just $500 a year. I would say you need more than just a policy though. Think about those suffering from insomnia, who WANT to get better sleep but can't. Or those working late nights, now getting punished twice. You need a "sleep-positive" work culture, leadership on board, role-modeling, training, and great health insurance with access to (sleep) psychologists to tackle root cause issues including sleep disorders. Oh and let's not forget about great maternity and paternity leave!! I cried at work today in front of the entire team. As the General Manager of Lucid Studios Co, an innovative wellness tech startup, I'm constantly reminded of the impact we’re making. Our device, the neuroVIZR, is designed to help people find sleep, achieve deep meditation, and experience extraordinary moments. But we are also helping people to overcome their trauma without any drugs. This week, I was asked by Garnet Dupuis, the inventor of the neuroVIZR, to try a specific session he just crafted, something outside our current collection and still secret for the moment. With curiosity and excitement, I put the neuroVIZR on my head and turned the light and sound on. Less than a minute in, I felt tears streaming down my face. The text was so incredible, and the sound overwhelmed my heart in the most profound way. In that moment, I was reminded that behind every innovation, there’s a human experience.
