There are few remaining roles in business where you can truly control your own destiny. Sales is one of them. If you hone your sales skills, are willing to out work your peers and competitors, and have the fortitude to push forward when things get tough, you can expect to be well compensated and have job security. In a world with a lot of curveballs thrown our way, I prefer to know the fastball is coming right down the middle. (Sorry to those non-baseball fans that have no idea what that last line means)

Personal drive is what I have found to separate the A-players from the pack. What drives you can in fact be personal, but it must be a fire that burns hot enough to withstand the harsh times that are inevitable. Those that leverage their personal drive to persevere will always have a leg up over those that have talent alone.

How can you stand out in partner management?
Here are a few things I have learned in 25+ years (that is painful to type) managing partnerships that will solidify relationships: 1. Be genuinely interested in your partners business, goals, and challenges. Treat them like you have an ownership stake. 2. Do not just listen to your partners, but more importantly hear what they are saying. There is a big difference. We all know the 80/20 rule (listen 80% and talk 20%), but I feel many of us treat the 80% listening time as a chore just not to speak and don't truly hear the critical pain points that are often shared. 3. Your best ability is availability! Stand out by being there when they need you despite time of day or day of the week.
