What do you do if your work-life balance is suffering in the fast-paced IT industry?
No matter how much you do, it will be there in the morning. Take care of yourself first, and work second. If you go the other way around, like I have at times, nothing good comes from it. If you have kids, spend as much time with them as possible. It's cliché, but real that most people don't have regrets about work, but they do about their personal lives. Prioritize it and you'll probably find yourself happier in your work life, too.

What do you do if your work-life balance is suffering in the fast-paced IT industry?
Here are a few ideas: - Stay current. The world of technology stops for no person. Do what you can to understand what's coming down the pike. - Get a chatGPT subscription. Use it to help with research, write scripts, and handle some of the routine stuff. I've used it for very simple things like writing job descriptions as well as more complex things like helping with market research. It's saving countless hours. - Go back to school. Consider an option like WGU to go back and get a first or additional degree, from BS to Masters. While self-directed, what you learn can be a boon to your career.

What do you do if your work-life balance is suffering in the fast-paced IT industry?
I'm not in IT anymore, at least not directly, but recall vividly the time demands and they're not dissimilar to the same balance challenges faced by everyone else. For me, it meant picking a start time in the AM and then sticking to it. It also meant getting a second phone that was just for work and putting it aside in the evenings and on the weekends. No work apps on my personal device. I also disabled all of the notifications so I need to proactively check Slack, email, Teams, etc., and not hear the constant dinging of work while I'm spending time at dinner, with the family, etc. It's made a tremendous difference.

How can you improve your emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills in IT?
It's been said that we have two ears and one mouth for a reason - so that we can listen twice as much as we speak. As would-be leaders strive to become actual leaders, the ones that are successful listen to those around them, watch how they handle situations, and incorporate the positive into their own routines. While poor leadership is regrettable for all involved, it's also a learning experience for those that observe poor behavior and take strides to avoid such conduct themselves.
