California Opens BEAD Map Challenge Process The state's challenge phase will last 30 days. July 10, 2024 – California's challenge phase for the Broadband Equity Access and Deployment Program officially opened on Monday and will continue through August 6. During this phase, local and Tribal governments, nonprofits, and internet service providers in the state can challenge the state’s broadband coverage map by submitting evidence that it is not accurate through an online portal. Entities can identify specific locations that may not be accurately represented as unserved, underserved, or served. The BEAD program requires states to map broadband connectivity and allocate funds to connect all unserved or underserved addresses. The challenge phase is the first stage in a five-stage, 120-day process to complete broadband coverage maps. The following stages include evidentiary review by the California Public Utilities Commission, rebuttal by challenged service providers, final determination of disputes, and submission of results to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration by the Commission. California was awarded $1.86 billion through BEAD allocations. It has not yet received NTIA approval of its initial proposal.

As someone who is invested in the broadband and internet industry, it's disheartening to read about the challenges rural children are facing due to the receding broadband access post-pandemic. This recent article by Investigate Midwest highlights a crucial issue that deserves our attention and action: https://lnkd.in/gfQWMv7b The pandemic underscored the importance of reliable internet access, especially for remote learning. 🚀 Bridging the Digital Divide🌐 I came across this insightful article by Brad Randall from Broadband Communities on San Diego County’s initiative to expand broadband access to its unincorporated areas. It's a stark reminder of how we often overlook rural areas that are just a short drive from densely populated regions. It's fascinating to realize that while urban areas have robust internet services and many times are arguably overserved, many communities within a short commute remain severely underserved. This initiative, powered by $9 million in ARPA funds, aims to change that, but it requires input and collaboration from stakeholders to maximize its impact. As we push for digital equity, it’s crucial to remember our neighboring rural communities. Their connectivity is just as vital and deserving of our attention. I can't help but also think the the #BulkBan push from the #FCC doesn't help in the efforts to reach communities just out of reach but close enough to infrastructures where going Bulk or Bulk managed Wifi allows providers to reach what would normally be unreachable for multiple reasons, many of the reasons Dan Myers has pointed out / outlined in his recent posts (check them out of you missed them) Kudos to San Diego County for taking this significant step forward!
