The last two weeks have been exhilarating! I've had the privilege of diving deep into a product's core with a fantastic team. The experience has only reaffirmed my belief in value-centered design. It's incredible how clearly defining values upfront can unlock creativity, drive meaningful decisions, and even simplify complex problems. This episode of the Finding Our Way podcast articulates, with such clarity, what’s been on my mind about the value proposition of design as a function. A business could leverage creating a stellar user experience as a strategic lever to succeed in the market, or NOT. The latter is totally acceptable where designers primarily focus on production tasks (like UI designs) in an org that prioritizes churning out features. Yet, it’s a bitter pill to swallow for many designers. They feel disgruntled and get exhausted speaking to the deaf ears about how great an outcome design can bring to the table and how influential they could be outside of Figma. This podcast talks about how many designer leaders are struggling to deal with this reality. As someone who is not in a leadership position, I feel the struggle too. But if I were to stay positive and constructive while prioritizing my mental sanity, these would be some options to consider. - Get hired by a company that REALLY values design (think Airbnb, Linear) - Be extremely good at your craft and find fulfillment in it, regardless of its direct impact on the bottom line—as long as you remain employed 🤷🏻‍♀️ - Elbow your way into cross-functional discussions as much as possible, at least within your team, to find opportunities to demonstrate what you can do outside of Figma. Thank god the Figma Adobe acquisition didn’t happen! Here’s why: Figma's differentiator has been its ability to exponentially help designers (and now developers) in effortlessly and elegantly turning ideas into a product. The introductory keynote by Dylan Field and Mihika Kapoor showcases how Figma is leading by example on how to build a product: 💡 Follow user feedback to add new features, be it if users are using your product in unusual ways (e.g. slides for presentations) or the standout banter on social media 🤝 Building relationships with other companies and utilising their superpowers (e.g. Open AI/Amazon LLMs or Apple/Google UI Kits) ⚡ Bringing existing Designer touch points inside Figma to reduce friction of moving between different websites and apps (e.g. the new AI features: creating mood boards through ‘make designs’, ‘Riffing and writing’ or slides for presentation) ⏱ Reducing the user load for repetitive and tedious tasks (e.g. Renaming frames or creating prototypes) It is these micro interactions when added together builds a unique lovable product. So why thank god the Figma Adobe acquisition didn’t happen? Adobe for long hasn't successfully shown the above characteristics of deep listening and deep collaboration. From where I stand, Figma dodged a chokehold.

Designing for Fun, Trust, and Engagement. While design KPIs are crucial, some product design decisions demand more. Take Google's dinosaur game in Chrome—initially built as a fun distraction for internet hiccups. Today, in Product Management circles, it's celebrated for boosting engagement, gamification, and user loyalty. By the way! Have you ever surpassed 700 points? Censorship is just one of many ways policing manifests in design and research. 🔹️Designers implement features of surveillance which gather and log personal information, location data, etc. User profiles are often set to automatically opt in without informed consent. 🔹️Developers engineer algorithms that determine what content gets moderated, without transparency in how content moderation decisions are made. 🔹️Researchers gatekeep participant contributions and interpret insights based on what fits their immediate need. Policing is one of 10 dimensions of coloniality in design and research that we will be diving in to at our session on Deconstructing Coloniality in Design and Research. "Delight" often gets a bad rap when mistaken only as animations, sound effects, and confetti. Here's how I think about delight and its sibling, utility: Utility is the VALUE a user derives from interacting with your product. Value warrants the product’s existence and, much like profitability makes a business sustainable, utility makes a product sustainable. ↳ Utility creates loyalty. Delight is the SATISFACTION a user derives from interacting with your product. Whereas utility is “I need to use this product”, delight is “I want to use this product”, and in the best cases “I want others to use this product too.” Maximizing delight translates to higher app ratings, increased NPS, stronger brand affinity, and increased virality. ↳ Delight creates advocacy. Design, Product, Engineering must work closely to put utility first. But each of these — Design in particular — must also advocate for delight to transform product value from “need to” to “want to.” Prioritizing delight is another form of slowing down to speed up. Small investments in delight now can translate to exponential gains in 'free' advocacy later. #delight #utility #design

Figma Config 2024 was a whirlwind of learning, networking, and dealing with unexpected challenges. I was lucky to attend with my team. Here’s a recap of my experiences and highlights from the event. If you don't enjoy reading blogs, here's the TL;DR: The Return of Maximalism: Now the MAMAA’s are renouncing sameness, and we are going to see the repercussion of this shift downstream. It has been 10+ years of tech minimalism, specially accentuated by Material Design principles. This week Google and others openly revealed their shift discussing their updated Material Design mantras that focus more on craft and flexibility: “Form follows feelings.” Planning Around Ambiguity: Emphasized the importance of building processes that enable teams to navigate uncertainty. Relying on Intuition: Shifting away from data-backed decisions is speeding up innovation among some of the big tech players. The destigmatization of intuition is creating (again) a protected space for tastemakers to create better experiences with less of a burden to prove their “how” is right. Collaboration with Engineering: Highlighted the need for leaders to foster strong cross-functional relationships. There’s a return of the UX Engineer, and I’m here for it! Ethan Eismann from Slack spoke about their ambassador program that allows any engineer to join the Design org for 3 to 6 months. During this time, engineers learn design methodologies. After their rotation, they return to their original teams, sharing their new insights and spreading the craftsmanship “vibe” across the company. Measuring Team Health: Discussed the pitfalls of relying solely on metrics like velocity, advocating for a focus on team “vibe” and consistency. Even though I laughed several times as I heard from reputable organizations (such as Github, Figma, Google, Slack, and LaunchDarkly) talking about making room to seeing the right vibes as a way to measure success, I understand the sentiment behind this. Many KPIs foster the wrong behavior with people. For example: you don’t want to reward someone just because they did more commits or because they solved more JIRA or customer support tickets. Craft is back: Slack leadership emphasized the importance of craft in software design, advocating for minimal lovable products (MLPs) over minimal viable products (MVPs). They shared the venn diagram of the qualities of software: utility, usability, and craft. If you only have utility and usability, your product’s feeling is simply mundane. A combination of utility, usability, and craft is the only way to make your product great. Dale Sande: Discussed the benefits of using web components for maintaining design systems, especially in small teams. Web components are particularly beneficial if someone is making a design system for multiple codebases. His design system for Alaska Airlines is making its way outside of the web and appearing in airport screens.
