Since early 2021, VC quarterly exit values have plummeted to $50B or below, a stark contrast to the six consecutive quarters of $100B+ exits before then. With IPOs dwindling and M&A activity slow, the future of venture industry exits appears uncertain. Will we see a surge in private venture-backed company acquisitions? This could be a crucial and innovative strategy to boost VC exits. Ross Haleliuk posted the fantastic article below. This is the world where I live day-to-day. At TechOperators, we invest mostly in early-stage cyber, but we do things a little differently, and we believe there are ways to invest successfully outside of pure Power Law math. The article argues that many security problems are too small for VC. I agree. I often try to convince bootstrapped founders not to raise venture because doing so can turn a successful, slow-growing bootstrapped company into a failed venture-backed company because, despite a large infusion of capital, it couldn't double every year. VC is not monolithic--not by stage, strategy, or style. Venture is often equated with "Tier 1 Venture". Ross argues that VC is not always great for early-stage cyber--and he is right. Bootstrapping AND VC work when incentives are aligned. Does it work for an early-stage VC with a <$200M fund to invest in several early companies at reasonable valuations, setting up the conditions for reasonable exits that pay off for both investors and founders? Yes. Does it work for $800M funds investing in seed stage at $100M+ valuations? Well, that depends! Power law says it does (for VC), but the unfortunate externality is that these rounds destroy companies and founder equity more often than not. There is a role for patient capital in this ecosystem to fuel successful companies that retain exit optionality as they scale--driving exit value for both founders and investors.

David shared a game-changing insight: Radical innovation is really, really difficult to do inside your own product. He emphasized the need to break free from the constraints of familiarity and embrace change from outside the box. Henrik Werdelin and I have both seen our fair share of this in our respective careers. What struck us most was how David leveraged structure to overcome the innovator’s dilemma. By creating a culture of experimentation and providing space for bold ideas, he propelled Typeform beyond incremental improvements. 1. What is the market size? 2. What are the growth rates? 3. Who are the key players in the market? I have a compelling case study to share here. My partner Russell Razhko runs a business in the USA that provides services directly to telecom operators (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc.). When the industry was growing, everything was going well. However, operators significantly cut expenses on equipment replacement and upgrades (with much of 5G already deployed and talks of a recession), causing the industry to decline by 65%. The team wanted to venture into adjacent industries (such as solar panel installation, electric vehicle charging stations, fiber optic installation, data centers, etc.), but deciding on the right path was unclear. Making decisions based on intuition or following competitors can be very costly in terms of money and time. Our business consulting agency team conducted an analysis of potential markets, and recently, we delivered a comprehensive 128-page report to Russell Razhko. It took our team only 2 weeks of work, and now the founders have all the information they need to make decisions about their future strategy. p.s. It’s exciting to witness how the hyperscalers are enabling a hyper-collaborative marketplace ecosystem that allows the multiplication of revenue opportunities. I see this happening in two ways 1️⃣ ISVs are being encouraged by hyperscalers to build with interoperability in mind 🔧 All three #hyperscalers have, over the course of the last few years, incrementally deepened their partnerships with on-page "competitors" like Salesforce and Snowflake to break data silos and leverage #GenAI on more comprehensive data sets. AWS, GCP and Azure are not just strengthening their own associations, but they are also actively encouraging collaboration between these ISVs to drive interoperability, aimed at the creation of joint solutions that significantly expand the universe of customers who can benefit. Snowflake’s most recent Polaris Catalog launch also reaffirms its commitment to interoperability with a wider library of industry players (beyond the three clouds) including hyperscaler partners like Salesforce and Confluent. That brings me to point 2…. 2️⃣ Hyperscalers are actively inviting the participation of channel partners to piece complementary solutions together 🤝 As ISVs focus on creating compatible offerings with each other, and with hyperscaler services, buyers have the opportunity to find end-to-end solutions for specific use cases right from the marketplace catalog. To do so, they’re relying on partners to identify, connect and manage these increasingly complex technologies. This presents a tremendous opportunity for channel partners to add value to these marketplace-led deals by helping piece solutions together into a comprehensive whole. Hyperscalers are also cognizant that the “channel is the glue between them and the lower enterprise, midmarket and SMB,” as I’ve hear my friend and founder of Ultimate Partner Vince Menzione put it, and are actively developing strategies to incorporate channels into marketplace deal workflows. There’s a clear signal to shift the perception of marketplaces from being potential threats to traditional partnership associations, to what they really are – growth opportunities. Channel partners who recognize this sooner rather than later, have biggest opportunity to capture net new business.

Juniper Square recently released their look back at the state of venture in Q2 2024, and the data is interesting. 👉 The liquidity drought continues to stifle fundraising, with $37.4B committed to 255 funds YTD. 👉 In the current climate, established managers are securing 77% of fund value YTD, the highest concentration in the last decade.  👉 Over 63% of capital raised in 2024 so far is in funds of $500M+, the second-highest percentage in the last decade. 👉 Q2 reflects an uptick in US venture deal momentum, with quarterly deal count climbing to the highest level since Q2 2022. 👉 Q2 data shows a third consecutive upward quarter in both exit value and the total number of exits.  👉 Q2 hit a 9-quarter high in total number of exits, and the total exit value recorded was the second-best quarter since Q1 2022. The data shows that the landscape is especially competitive for emerging managers. When it comes to generating returns though, a fresh perspective can help find the most interesting deals.
