Morgan Stanley Beats Estimates on Better-Than-Expected Trading and Investment Banking - Q2 Earnings Per Share (EPS) $1.82 vs Exp. $1.65 - Q2 Revenues $15.02bn vs Exp. $14.3bn ▶ Equity trading generated an 18% jump in revenue to $3.02bn vs Exp. $2.68bn Equity net revenues increased from a year ago reflecting strong performance across business lines and regions, particularly in Asia, on stronger client engagement and a constructive market environment. ▶ Fixed Income Currency & Commodities (FICC) trading revenue rose 16% to $1.99bn vs Exp. $1.86bn Fixed Income net revenues increased from a year ago driven by higher results in credit reflecting strong financing revenues and in foreign exchange on higher client engagement ▶ Investment banking revenue surged 51% to $1.62bn vs Exp. $1.4bn Advisory revenues increased from a year ago on higher completed M&A transactions (183 transactions YTD, 3rd on Global M&A Advisor Ranking). Today at 2:00 PM EST learn about Unmasking Stochastic Volatility in Discontinuous Continuity Approximations and Extracting VIX Optionality Directly from SPX Implied Volatilities Dilip Madan, Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Finance at the University of Maryland - Robert H. Smith School of Business will discuss how, when it comes to volatility, Brownian motion is blind and unable to distinguish three important aspects of motion. These are speed, the rate of motion in time, scale, the rate of motion in space, and the degree of continuity in motion or the relativity of speed to scale at small scales. The third is lost by being continuous, the first two are identified with each other by the scaling property. By focusing attention on discontinuous approximations to continuity instead, one is able to distinguish all three and then ask what is stochastic when volatility is stochastic. Is it speed, scale, or the degree of continuity? Models of stochastic speed are formulated by adapting current speeds going forward to realized speeds looking back. When they are calibrated to SPX option prices it is shown that they directly imply, via an endogenous construction of the volatility of volatility, the prices for options on both volatility and variance. Stylized facts observed in VIX option prices are then directly derived from SPX option prices.
