We had a wonderful TKMG Academy, Inc. Community of Practice discussion last Thursday! The topic was value streams, value stream management, and value stream mapping as a means to design, improve, and manage value streams. The photo below is a blend of images from our Value Stream and Process Mapping courses—which I shared with the COP attendees to illustrate the difference between viewing work from macro and micro perspectives. Both are necessary for long-term, significant improvement. And the difference between the purpose and outputs of the two mapping methods (Value Stream Mapping - transformation plan; Metrics-Based Process Mapping - standard work). I continue to see much confusion about process improvement vs. value stream improvement—and which mapping method to use. I hope this visual helps clarify. Let me know, OK? After getting requests to help several boards of directors get organized, it made total sense for me to adapt my already-proven process documentation and training programs to fit their structure. By design, a board's members will be regularly leaving and others will be coming on to help guide the company or non-profit. At the same time, each of the boards that I have served on was often unorganized and operated in an outdated and inefficient manner. Board members typically have other, sometimes more important responsibilities to attend to such as running businesses which means that their time being on a board needs to be respected. Leveraging my past board experience, 30 years of documenting processes to train others, and my knowledge of the latest in board-related operational software I am formally launching my Board Blueprint program. At its core it is designed to save everyone involved with the board, a lot of time onboarding members and running more effective meetings.
