Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit

The Department of Biostatistics ( BIOS ) is internationally recognized as a leader in Biostatistics research and training. It is one of eight departments in the Gillings School of Global Public Health whose mission is to improve public health, promote individual well-being and eliminate health inequities across North Carolina and around the world. This mission is accomplished through an outstanding program of collaborative teaching, research and service. The Department of Biostatistics is one of the largest, most complex departments at UNC , receiving over $35 million in research funding in 2022. Currently BIOS includes approximately 290 students (90 undergraduate, 200 graduate), 100 permanent staff members, and 40 faculty members (30 with primary appointments in BIOS ), as well as an additional 20 adjunct faculty members. The Department of Biostatistics is housed in three different locations: administrative and faculty offices, including a suite of offices for graduate students, in McGavran-Greenberg Hall; the Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center at Carolina Square; and the Carolina Survey Research Laboratory at Bolin Creek Center.

Position Summary

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ( UNC ) Department of Biostatistics and the Laboratory for Innovative Clinical Trials ( LICT ) are seeking applications for a tenure-track faculty position beginning in Spring 2025. This 12-month full-time position will be at the rank of Assistant Professor. The department seeks exceptional candidates who can contribute to the academic and research enterprise of the department. The successful applicants will be expected to develop and maintain research programs supported by external funding and to be engaged in the teaching, mentoring, and service activities of the department. The focus of the search is on areas of biostatistics related to Bayesian methods for complex innovative clinical trial design, adaptive designs, pragmatic trial design, Bayesian computation, prior elicitation, and Bayesian regression modeling with survival, longitudinal, and discrete data.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

A doctoral degree in biostatistics, statistics, mathematics, computer science or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Applicants should have broad research and possible teaching interests, the potential to direct PhD-level research, and the ability to engage in collaborative research with other faculty members at the University, the LICT , and industry. Strong preference will be given to candidates with expertise in Bayesian methods for complex trial design and analysis. Candidates must have expertise in the R programming language and at least one Bayesian statistical package (e.g., Stan, JAGS , and/or nimble). Experience developing R packages that interface with Rcpp would be a plus but is not required. The applicant should have excellent communication skills.
