The College of Performing Arts, a college of The New School, invites candidates for a full-time faculty fixed-term appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor of Jazz at the School of Jazz to begin July 1 2024. The Assistant Professor will be an outstanding artist, scholar and instructor of Jazz. They must show evidence of innovation in their pedagogical approaches and be forward-thinking about what skills and literacies are required to empower students to succeed in today’s creative fields and economies.

The position is split between 70% teaching and 30% service. They will teach seven 3-credit, 45 contact hour courses per year or the equivalent in load hours and will be assigned service in areas of need that align with interest and expertise where possible. The Assistant Professor will provide teaching and leadership primarily within the school’s Singer-Songwriter program. They should have a singer-songwriter practice and be prepared to teach in a range of areas such as composition, music theory, improvisation, ear training, ensemble work, recording, and private instruction. Primary consideration will be given to candidates who play the guitar and other plucked string instruments, and who have a creative practice that includes contemporary experimental work. The Assistant Professor of Jazz will work with students from diverse backgrounds and from a variety of disciplines across the college.

This appointment is for a period of two years with the possibility of extension pending available funding and review of institutional need. The terms and conditions of faculty appointments are governed by The New School policies set forth in The New School Full-Time Faculty Handbook. All hiring is subject to final Provost budgetary approval.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A terminal degree or demonstrated equivalence.
  • Prior teaching experience at university level.
  • Expertise in contemporary approaches, concepts, techniques, and critical issues as they relate to their area of expertise.
  • Active creative or teaching practice and significant currency in the field.
  • Ability to develop and nurture individual student’s progress and a strong commitment to progressive education models.
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, communicate and motivate effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current part-time faculty or administrative staff at The New School.
  • Current faculty at the School of Jazz & Contemporary Music engaged in a high volume and wide range of teaching and service.
  • The ideal candidate will deepen our capacities in equity, inclusion, and social justice through their teaching and practice.

WORK MODALITY

On-Campus Position: Faculty are expected to work on-campus due to the nature of the work in accordance with University policies as set forth in the Full-Time Faculty Handbook.

SALARY

$70,000 - $75,000 annual
