Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit

The Office of the Executive Director for the Arts administratively houses Carolina Performing Arts, a comprehensive performing arts presenter serving the UNC campus and beyond, as well as Arts Everywhere, a campus-wide arts initiative supported by the Office of the Chancellor at UNC -Chapel Hill.

The mission of Carolina Performing Arts is to spark curiosity, inspiring all members of our community to discover and more fully engage with the world. We collaborate with dynamic and compelling artists from across the globe to create novel, mission-driven performing arts experiences in partnership with our community. Carolina Performing Arts ( CPA ) integrates the performing arts into the core academic and teaching mission of the University through its diverse programming and engagement initiatives and champions the power of exceptional arts experiences to enrich, inspire, challenge and transform. CPA oversees all artistic programming, campus and community engagement, marketing, and fundraising for its presented performances and manages all operations of its venues including facility rentals, technical production, audience services, and ticketing.

Established in 2016, Arts Everywhere collaborates with diverse partners to embed the arts into daily life at Carolina through creative and cutting-edge programs that promote artistic expression, live arts experiences, and learning through the arts. The initiative’s vision reflects the potential impact of the arts at a leading, global, public research university: a global force for public good, the arts at Carolina generate new knowledge, develop citizen leaders, address complex challenges, and catalyze economic development. Through collaborative programming, strategic communication, advocacy, coordinated fundraising, and other efforts, the initiative makes creativity and artistic expression a fundamental part of the Carolina experience and education.

Position Summary

The Office of the Executive Director for the Arts (Carolina Performing Arts) is responsible for planning and presenting a comprehensive performing arts program serving the UNC campus and beyond. The mission of Carolina Performing Arts is to spark curiosity, inspiring all members of our community to discover and more fully engage with the world. We collaborate with dynamic and compelling artists from across the globe to create novel, mission-driven performing arts experiences in partnership with our community. Carolina Performing Arts ( CPA ) integrates the performing arts into the core academic and teaching mission of the University through its diverse programming and engagement initiatives and champions the power of exceptional arts experiences to enrich, inspire, challenge and transform. CPA oversees all artistic programming, campus and community engagement, marketing, and fundraising for its presented performances and manages all operations of its venues including facility rentals, technical production, audience services, and ticketing.

Private giving represents a primary, vital source of revenue for CPA and is inextricably linked to the organization’s evolution and its ability to inspire audiences, nurture artistic innovation and excellence, and foster community co-creation. The Development team’s singular priority is to cement and sustain CPA’s strong philanthropic culture powered by a dedicated board and donor community.

Reporting to and partnering with the Director of Development, the Associate Director of Development ( ADD ) serves as deputy of CPA’s development and fundraising team with a dual focus on major gift fundraising and co-managing administrative components for the development department of CPA . The ADD will identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects and donors with primary focus on the major gift level of $100K and higher as well as partner with the Director of Development ( DOD ) to co-create a strategic comprehensive development plan for private support through major gifts, planned gifts, principal gifts, leadership annual giving, and corporate and foundation gifts.

The Associate Director of Development will maintain an active portfolio of donors, moving them successfully through the gift cycle to advance CPA’s campaign goals. This position will use CPA patron and UNC constituent data to build a robust pipeline of qualified individual, corporate, and foundation prospects and donors that will cement CPA’s future fiscal sustainability and will engage and motivate a diverse community of stakeholders through all channels of CPA’s programmatic offerings. They will assist in staffing and supporting the International Advisory Board and up to two committees and will plan fundraising and stewardship events, particularly as they relate to major gift prospects and donors.

The ADD will partner with the DOD in building and sustaining internal relationships across CPA departments. This position is expected to collaborate with colleagues to advance CPA’s philanthropic goals, promote best practices for fiscal sustainability and reporting, ideate on funding opportunities that will meet donors’ needs and institutional goals, and communicate the critical need for philanthropic support through impact storytelling. The ADD will foster collaborative pan-university development efforts between Carolina Performing Arts, UNC’s University Development Office ( UDO ), and other units and partners across the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a member of the University’s OneCarolina development organization, the ADD will set and meet personal fundraising goals consistent with best practices at UNC , will represent UNC and partner with development colleagues in a collaborative and coordinated fashion, and will maintain their prospect activity in the UDO Davie database. When conditions allow, local, regional, and on occasion international travel will be required. Evening & some weekend work are required.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

  • A minimum of 2 to 3 years of fundraising or related experience, with a preference for experience identifying, cultivating and soliciting major gifts. Successful track record of comprehensive campaign fundraising in higher education or the arts and volunteer management are preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills with the ability to make a compelling case for philanthropic support to CPA , aligning donors’ interests with organizational priorities.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and judgment.
  • Ability to interact effectively in comprehensive environment such as a research university setting with donors, patrons, administrators, faculty, staff and volunteers.
