ABOUT THE POSITION


This is an exciting full-time position for an individual passionate about designing custom applications and user experiences that have a substantial impact at the intersection of clean energy and social justice. The Associate Director, Product Design will work closely with a team that includes a program manager, web development manager, and software developer to build a comprehensive and engaging experience for both internal and external users of Groundswell’s proprietary SharePower software platform. With Groundswell programs poised to serve more than 40,000 Empowered (income-qualifying) households over the next five years, the Associate Director will have a people-focused design mentality that positions our software platform to scale as the program itself grows.


The SharePower platform includes a program administration interface for internal staff, a business intelligence portal for external project owners, and a subscriber dashboard for end customers. As the lead architect of the SharePower platform, the Associate Director, Product Design, will play a crucial role in building an easy-to-use and pleasurable experience for all end users. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability in custom designing digital products and user experiences, including user journey mapping, storyboarding and prototyping, A/B testing, information architecture design, workshop facilitation, and working across teams to implement and launch initiatives.


The Associate Director, Product Design will report and provide subject matter expertise to the Director of Subscriber Services. The candidate must be able to provide strategic advice and sound recommendations that support business decisions, synchronize investments, and drive the SharePower platform’s value and overall marketability. You will work closely with other Groundswell teams and a host of external stakeholders ranging from government representatives, solar project developers, and utility personnel to end customers. You will work in a collaborative, fast-paced, team-driven environment and frequently communicate internally and externally.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


SharePower Platform UX Design

  • Develop optimal user experiences that synchronize internal workflows and improve the usability, accessibility, and efficiency of user interactions with SharePower.
  • Design new features that support efficient and effective project management, including but not limited to subscription data reporting, financial transaction monitoring, and project impact reports.
  • Create functionality for subscription summary reports, project impact metrics, and other UX enhancements that augment SharePower’s customer engagement abilities.
  • Construct solar project summary reports and other business intelligence portal enhancements that provide external solar project owners with pertinent information relevant to their projects.
  • Build wireframes, prototypes, and visual designs based on our UI framework to tackle complex UX problems.
  • Build frameworks to measure the effectiveness of designs among users and stakeholders and improve based on quantitative and qualitative feedback.
  • Develop and convey ideas clearly in a written and visual format that makes business concepts visually engaging.
  • Monitor for bugs and issues uncovered by users, work with the team to correct any issues, and release updates that resolve any problems.
  • Partner with software development to understand SharePower’s technical capabilities and propose new approaches and designs integrating AI and other innovative technologies.
  • Identify future opportunities, working as a critical thought partner to your counterparts in program administration and software development.


SharePower Website UX Design

  • Design an online enrollment process for Empowered (income-qualifying) subscribers through the Groundswell website(s).
  • Enhance the online enrollment process for SharePower’s market-rate (residential) subscribers to minimize barriers to entry.
  • Partner with web development counterparts to enhance the digital landscape of the SharePower website, making the user experience simple and intuitive.
  • Lead initiatives to integrate AI technologies, such as ChatGPT and related plugins, to enhance website design, operations, and user engagement.


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES


As a member of the Groundswell team, the Associate Director, Product Design is expected to participate in the overall execution of Groundswell programs:

  • May be asked to represent Groundswell in public forums, engage with institutional partners, and prepare content for publication.
  • Support the pursuit of opportunities aligned with the Groundswell mission.
  • Seek opportunities to drive continuous improvement in Groundswell programs, processes, and procedures.

COMPETENCIES OR SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE

  • Expertise in design software such as Figma, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign.
  • Proficiency in Content Management Systems such as MODX.
  • Experience with SEO tools, including Google Analytics.
  • Deep understanding of UX and UI principles, including research, graphic design, and design thinking.
  • Strong portfolio of previous product design work showcasing an ability to meet business needs by design.
  • Comfort with working in ambiguous spaces that are technically complex.
  • Strong working knowledge of Salesforce.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with diverse stakeholders at all levels.
  • Problem-solving capabilities and analytical skills are critical.
  • Prior experience in solar and clean energy is a plus.
  • Familiarity with AI technologies, particularly ChatGPT and related plugins, is a plus.


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in design, graphic design, product development, or a related field
  • 5+ years of professional, hands-on design experience


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is based in Washington, D.C., and is expected to work in-office four days per month in alignment with Groundswell’s hybrid/remote work plan.


POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and core hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.


TRAVEL

Occasional local, regional, or national travel may be required for this position but is anticipated to be minimal.


SUPERVISION

The Associate Director, Product Design will report to the Director of Subscriber Services.


COMPENSATION

Compensation for this position is in Groundswell's established pay band for the Associate Director title, with a full-time employee benefits package.


BENEFITS

  • Groundswell pays 100% of the monthly premium for health, dental, vision, and long-term disability for full-time employees in accordance with Groundswell's policy. Groundswell also covers 50% of spouses and dependents covered under the Groundswell healthcare, vision, and dental plan.
  • Matching 401(k) plan contribution by Groundswell up to 4% for employees who choose to contribute to the plan with immediate vesting.
  • $45 per month to reimburse cellular phone use for business purposes.
  • $75 per month to reimburse home internet access for business purposes.
  • Fifteen (15) paid vacation days per year, eight (8) sick days, and two (2) personal days. Vacation and sick leave accrue at the start of your employment, restart each year on January 1, and increase with tenure. Personal days begin after six months of employment.
  • Groundswell also takes eight (9) paid federal holidays and a holiday break from December 24th to January 1st (inclusive).
