Duties

The Associate Vice President & Chief Business Officer is a highly skilled and experienced finance professional to join our Center’s (GUMC) financial leadership team. They will serve as a key member of the Vice President for Finance’s (VPF) leadership team working closely with Senior Business Managers and finance teams to ensure the financial health and sustainability of GUMC. The incumbent will serve as the Deputy Financial Officer and as a strategic partner to the VPF, in financial administration and in GUMC's accounting operations, including finance, grants management, endowment, accounting, payroll, taxes, student business operations, contract review, budget, purchasing/procurement, audit control and compliance, and technology resources. This role involves strategic financial planning, oversight of financial operations, supervision of the GUMC finance team, and collaboration with various stakeholders within the institution. Additional duties include but are not limited to:

Financial Planning and Strategy

  • Assist the VPF in developing and implementing financial strategies aligned with the institution's mission, goals, and strategic plans.
  • Contribute to formulating annual budgets, forecasts, and multi-year budgeting/forecasting.
  • Interact on a consistent basis with the GUMC Office of Communications, Faculty Affairs, University Counsel, Regulatory Affairs, Human Resources, and the executive staff, acting as point of contact for GUMC’s external academic and research partners regarding financial matters.

Financial Operations Oversight & Risk Management

  • Supervise financial operations, including budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulations, and institutional policies.
  • Identify financial risks and implement risk mitigation strategies.
  • Review financial aspects of the agreements, both internal and external, to ensure the best interests of the University/GUMC.

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Collaborate with academic and administrative departments to provide financial guidance and support.
  • Collaboration with external partners, both research and academic.
  • Engage with senior leadership to communicate financial performance and contribute to decision-making processes.

Financial Reporting, Analysis, Compliance

  • Prepare and present financial reports to the CFO and other stakeholders.
  • Conduct financial analysis to support strategic decision-making and resource allocation.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard financial assets.
  • Supervise the core finance leadership team for GUMC.

Requirements And Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Business Administration or equivalent experience
  • At least 7 years of progressive experience in a related field, preferably in higher education or another research-based non-profit organization
  • Expertise in externally funded research in a medical setting, financial analyses, financial modeling, resources-based cost accounting, budgeting, cost estimating and control, and strategic planning
  • Strong computer skills, analytical skills, and attention to detail and understanding, as well as appreciation of higher education
  • Experience with a medical center and research with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of personnel in a diverse environment; ability to work independently, proactively, and assertively
  • Ability to work within a politically and financially complex organization
  • Comprehensive understanding of current knowledge of spreadsheet software and financial management tools, including Workday is a plus

Pay Range

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$135,188.00 - $264,291.85

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
