Job Overview

The Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions at the University of Cincinnati Health Sciences Library seeks recent graduates in public history, library science or a related field to apply for a full-time Archival Fellowship; Project Based.

Fellows will be introduced to the full range of daily operational, academic, and curatorial duties associated with the Winkler Center including responsible for processing new and backlogs of archives and artifacts collections through employing archival ‘best practices’ while adapting them to the uniqueness of the Winkler Center collections etc.

Relationship And Authority

Reports to the Archivist Curator and receives direction from the Director, Health Sciences Library.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to archival ‘best practice’ standards in collection handling and archival processing;
  • Process, arrange and describe new/backlogs of archives and artifacts collections;
  • Fulfill and monitor reference and media requests from students, faculty, and researchers, including providing reference interviews, retrieving materials for use in reading room, and scanning materials to transmit digitally.
  • Accession archives and artifacts collections;
  • Produce and/or assist in the production of exhibits. Duties include but are not limited to writing scripts, choosing images, designing, and liaising with university and outside contractors.
  • Support and engage in Winkler Center grant proposals.
  • Assist with the oral history program, the annual Striker Lecture, and public programming;
  • Recruit Winkler Center student employees and assist in training/supervision;
  • Prioritize and digitize primary source materials;
  • Utilize ArchivesSpace;
  • Contribute to Winkler Center social media and website;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education

Master of Art in history, or Master’s degree in library or information science with a demonstrated understanding of digital librarianship from an ALA-accredited institution or a graduate degree in a related field.

Required Experience

Demonstrated understanding of digital librarianship. Experience working in an academic health sciences or research archives. Experience processing archival collections (analog, digital, print, physical items/artifacts) using archival ‘best practices’. General knowledge of standards-based metadata schemas.

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Experience handling and working with rare books and special collections;
  • Experience in providing excellent customer service, and a strong commitment to providing timely responsive and innovative service;
  • Aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail;
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities;
  • Experience using image editing and/or web development software;
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS);
  • Experience managing and conducting oral history interviews;
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently and to contribute positively to a collegial team environment;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
