This position is remote (along with all of our BenchPrep positions). BenchPrep is looking for a hardworking, ambitious Controller to support its growing operations in Chicago.
About the role:
The Controller is a key member of the finance leadership team and a business partner to the organization. The Controller will ensure Company's transactions are recorded timely and accurately in compliance with GAAP, produce monthly financial reporting, optimize and expand financial processes, and maintain a strong control environment and tax compliance. The Controller will manage a Sr Accountant and be responsible for their growth and development.
The key components of the work you'll be doing in this role are:
Collecting and reporting financial data in compliance with GAAP
Overseeing timely and efficient monthly and annual financial close
Overseeing payroll, accounts receivable and accounts payable as well as billing and collections
Ensure revenue recognition and sales contracts comply with ASC 606 accounting standard
Establishing, monitoring and enforcing policies and procedures
Establishing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls to protect assets
Managing banking relationships, maximizing return, and limiting risk, on cash
Smooth and accurate processing of all business transactions: payroll, AR, AP, equity, etc.
Managing auditor relationships and ensuring smooth annual audit process
Working with external legal counsel to advise business on commercial contracts
Handling insurance and risk management policies
Selection and maintenance of financial software
Own tax compliance and developing proactive tax strategies
Complying with federal, state, and local legal requirements
Ensuring timely and accurate administration of equity compensation transactions and completing periodic equity valuation analyses
Contributing to the broader organization, designing processes where needed
Supervisory/Management responsibilities: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with BenchPrep policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training employees, assigning and directing work, performance reviews rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Skills and experiences we value:
8+ years of relevant experience, including Big 4 public accounting experience and public market exposure (preferred)
Bachelor's degree in Accounting
Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
Comfortable leading teams through ambiguity and be a champion of change
Experience with SaaS business model and in particular subscription-based revenue recognition
Demonstrated ability to build and lead high performing teams
Experience with complex technical accounting matters
Strong analytical and problem solving skills

At BenchPrep, we pride ourselves on offering a great total rewards package to each employee, including medical and ancillary benefits, potential for yearly bonus, stipends for work-from-home expenses, flexible paid time off (our version of unlimited PTO), annual professional development stipend dollars, and of course, a competitive base salary. The salary range for this position is between $140,000 - 170,000 and is set based on Chicago market data. Please note this refers to the amount BenchPrep is willing to pay at the time of this posting.
