The company is committed to building and improving lives and delivering high-quality product through a collaborative construction process. The company’s services include ground-up construction for commercial, industrial, office, and hospitality projects, as well as tenant improvements of existing spaces. The company currently does $80M+ in annual construction business and has a staff of about 30 people. The company has grown significantly over the past decade and is poised for additional growth in the next few years.
Position
The Controller (CFO) is the highest-ranking member of the company’s financial team and reports directly to the President. The Controller serves as the leader of the finance department and is responsible for the department and its operations, including all project and company financials. The Controller ensures the continued development of the department and its staff as the company continues to grow into different sectors in the construction industry. Other keys to success with this position include having a continuous improvement mindset and the ability to change the reporting and tasks as the needs of the business change.
Responsibilities
Directing accounting operations, overseeing all transactions related to general ledger, job cost, receivables, payables, payroll and financial reporting.
Analyzing company's financial results with respect to profits, trends, costs and compliance with budgets.
Issue regular status and ad hoc reports to CEO, President and Senior Management
Manage the subcontractor prequalification process, reviewing subcontractor financials when necessary to determine if the subcontractors qualify to do work for the company
Developing cash forecasting at the company level and providing input on deployment of capital
Coordinating and continue the development of relationships with banks, insurance broker, and sureties.
Lead role working with the benefits brokers in the application stage, selecting the appropriate plans and offerings and find cost savings wherever appropriate.
Maintaining existing accounting policies and systems, working with staff to develop new ones where needed.
Ensuring that records are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
Managing both the general contracting and development accounting teams
Work with CPA, CEO, and President focusing on financial planning and results management.
Work with other team members to understand revenue and cost drivers and define appropriate reports for tracking.
Ensures the company 401K program is compliant and participates in the management’s fiduciary reviews. Works with outside counsel and third-party advisor (TPA)
Coordinating and reviewing monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
Coordinating and/or preparing required tax schedules and information.
Managing all tax compliance for all required federal, state, local, payroll, property and other applicable taxes.
Be primary contact for external auditors ensuring an accurate and smooth audit
Prepare bi-annual employee reviews and bonus worksheets
Maintain Employee Handbook and Safety Manual for current state and federal regulations
Develop, implement and monitor workers' compensation claims reporting forms, procedures and activities.
Works with the Risk Manager to select and contract for third party claims adjusting administration and other workers' compensation program related services and products.
Monitor Cyber Risk process
Assist VP of Operations and General Superintendent with paperwork required to hire staff, posting jobs online, scheduling interviews, and generating offer letters.
Oversee benefits enrollment and management.
Ensure compliance with HR policies and procedures.
Other finance and administrative duties as required.
Qualifications
10 plus years of managerial accounting and financial management experience.
Experience in a construction business or another related industry with project costing
Recent experience managing a team of with over $50m in revenue.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business. CPA preferred but not required.
Foundations Accounting Software knowledge preferred but not required.
Knowledge of Excel and MS Query
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with fluctuating priorities and deadlines.
Ability to work without direct supervision, and efficiently manage tasks and time.
