Role Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Accounting to join our dynamic finance team. The Director of Accounting will be responsible for managing all aspects of accounting operations, ensuring compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) requirements, overseeing the accounts payable (AP) and payroll function, and supporting the preparation of public company filings. This role is pivotal in ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, and supporting the financial health of the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for the month-end and quarter-end close process, ensuring timely and accurate completion in accordance with U.S. GAAP
  • Oversee preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations, fluctuation analyses, and close financial statements
  • Lead the oversight of R&D and G&A accruals, particularly activities relating to clinical trials, CROs, CMC/TechOps, and other R&D functions; by conducting accrual meetings, reviewing contracts for accounting impact, and coordinating Apogee business partner and vendor communications
  • Help develop key finance and accounting process flows to support growth and complexity of the Company and any corresponding impact to financial statements and/or disclosures
  • Oversee the AP function, ensuring timely payment of vendor invoices and assisting with vendor management, and growth and advancement of the Company’s purchase requisition process
  • Oversee the payroll processing function for a multi-state organization, ensuring timely and accurate payment to employees and proper accounting of payroll-related items such as payroll taxes, 401(k), and employee benefits
  • Collaborate with Director of SEC Reporting to support the preparation of public company filings, including the Annual Forms 10-K and quarterly Forms 10-Q
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial analyses for senior management, audit committee and other stakeholders to support strategic insights and decision-making
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures around key business processes
  • Work with external consultants and auditors to support audits of the Company’s internal controls and financial statements
  • Ensure compliance with SOX 404 requirements and maintain documentation of key financial processes and controls
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver timely, reliable, and decision-ready information to business partners
  • Perform other related accounting/finance duties as required

Ideal Candidate

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in accounting, with a combination of public accounting and public company biotech/life sciences industry experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting; CPA preferred
  • In-depth knowledge of U.S. GAAP and SOX 404 requirements
  • Experience with NetSuite is strongly desired; experience with ADP, E*TRADE/Equity Edge Online, and Agiloft a plus
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate developed strategies and analyses clearly and effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and mentor a team
  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment and manage competing priorities

  • Ability and willingness to travel to company meetings up to 10%

The anticipated salary range for candidates for this role will be $210,000 - $230,000/year. The final salary offered will depend on several factors, which may include, but is not limited to relevant years of experience, educational background, and geography.
