Bourke Street Bakery is hiring for an exciting new opportunity - Director of Operations - for an immediate start.

This is a varied, challenging role for an experienced hospitality professional who loves food and people and wants to be a leader in a growing business in NYC.

You are responsible for managing the smooth daily operations of all five retail stores (NoMad, Chelsea, Grand Central Terminal, Jersey City & Radio City) as well as overseeing wholesale, head office, marketing & sales, human resources, brand integrity, and building a culture of warmth and excellence. You are organized, an excellent communicator, and skilled at implementing systems and company policies. This role is operational and leadership-focused. You will have 3 direct reports and will report directly to the owner and will need to report to the board every 2 months.

THE ROLE - 3 main pillars:

  • MANAGE THE MANAGERS:

This is your most important role. You will have 3 direct reports.

Empower direct reports and their teams to give Bourke Street customers the warmest possible welcome. Friendliness, professionalism, and product knowledge are fundamental to our business.

  • District manager.
    • Oversees a team of 5 shop managers & their day-to-day performance by adhering to and implementing systems and training them to be effective leaders and role models.
    • Empower individual store managers through the district manager and keep them accountable for their responsibilities.
    • Build a team culture, resolving problems and diffusing conflicts or issues.
    • Ensure hygiene and food safety rules are adhered to maintain an A rating in all stores.
    • Support district manager with staff recruitment and terminations as required.
  • Office manager.
    • You will need to oversee the office manager who is tasked with keeping all back-end systems operational, including payroll, wholesale invoicing/accounts payable, onboarding, production numbers, and maintenance issues.
    • Oversee all their daily orders, tasks, and shop requests to ensure they are met.
    • Oversee smooth logistics operations between kitchen production and delivery drivers.
    • Oversee team management of food ordering platforms.
    • Ensure brand integrity through social media channels, and newsletters are maintained.
    • Provide strong leadership, supervision, effective communication, attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving.
    • Sourcing and organization of vendors to simplify ordering across all retail stores.
    • Oversee team to ensure management of inventory and waste, shift scheduling, customer service, and client relationships.
  • Production manager
    • Immediately build and maintain excellent working relationships with the production manager (kitchen lead) to ensure BOH and FOH work seamlessly together.
    • Support production manager with staff recruitment and terminations as required Work closely with the production manager to ensure daily delivery of consistent premium quality baked products.
    • Work with the production manager to oversee logistics and van maintenance.
    • Display high levels of communication, leadership, and collaboration to develop kitchen talent, instill great employee morale, and give confidence to their team.
    • An approachable and solution-based attitude that invites approachability and the ability to diffuse conflict.
2. RETAIL OPERATIONS:

  • Retail store merchandising and physical spaces - ensuring products are displayed properly while maintaining excellent hygiene and safety standards.
  • Uphold the system of staff education across stores, train new employees to enhance job performance and retention, and oversee continual development and implementation of onboarding and building culture.
  • Education and training with existing and new products—instilling an appreciation of artisan food and making sure staff know and understand sourdough and other Bourke Street Bakery specialties.
  • Ensure excellence in coffee through barista training & maximizing opportunities through our existing coffee program.
  • We work closely with our roaster (Counter Culture) to ensure that all baristas make coffee to a consistent standard of excellence.
  • Develop a front-of-house operational strategy to retain and build customer loyalty
  • Oversee equipment maintenance and cleaning schedules.
  • Implement and refine operational policies and practical strategies to drive productivity, profitability, and customer satisfaction.
  • Display high levels of communication, leadership, and collaboration to develop talent, instill great employee morale, and give confidence to your team.
  • An approachable and solution-based attitude that invites approachability and the ability to diffuse conflict.

3. DRIVE SALES:

  • Increase in-store and online profitability and work with marketing to identify and capitalize on seasonal periods, food trends, and market demands
  • Maintain inventory software, and use basic data analytics to drive sales and meet targets

IN ESSENCE:

  • Your success will come from empowered managers who can think on their feet and solve issues independently.
  • You will be detail-oriented, focused, and able to implement change.
  • You will have a high degree of emotional intelligence as well as the ability to read and respond to sales figures and financials.
  • You will be largely autonomous and ultimately responsible for the operating health of the business.
