Job Title: Lead Consultant  

Status: Full-time, exempt 

Location: 3 or more days in the San Francisco, CA office and up to 2 days remote. On Occasion, you may be asked to work additional days in the office or remotely from other locations as needed.

Schedule: M-F; 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM (PT), occasional evenings, weekends, and travel 

Salary: $78,850

Position Summary: The primary responsibilities of a Lead Consultant are to ensure that assigned client contracts and all associated deliverables are on time, on budget, and meet AMC standards of quality. Additionally, the Lead Consultant is the main person responsible for managing client relationships and client expectations. The Lead Consultant is evaluated based on how they carry out these responsibilities in addition to overall client satisfaction as measured by formal and informal client feedback. Typically, Lead Consultants have at least five years of experience working in a nonprofit, fundraising, and/or communications setting.  


Key Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Leads multiple client contracts at any given time; oversees all contract budgets, objectives, and deliverables and is responsible for overall profitability of assigned client portfolio; 
  • Meet or exceed 300 client hour goal per quarter, for a total of 1,200+ client hours per year; 
  • Cultivates client relationships and manages client expectations; 
  • Collaborates with clients, writers, and other team members to develop/brainstorm organizational and/or program design ideas that are feasible and capture the funder's attention; 
  • Responsible for strong project management, including activities and team coordination (project coordinators, writers, and management), leading to project and contract completion; 
  • Monitors progress toward all contract deliverables, manages workflow for team members, and keeps clients informed on overall contract/project progress; 
  • Leads client/team check-in meetings; ensures that all client meetings have agendas sent to client leads in advance;  
  • Ensures that project coordinators set up all client projects in Asana (project management software) in accordance with AMC operating procedures; 
  • Sets up project budgets in Harvest (time management software) and monitors hours toward each project; responsible for ensuring that projects stay within budget; 
  • Identifies team member strengths and weaknesses and recommends opportunities for training and advancement; 
  • Signs off on all written products and AMC team questions before they are sent to assigned clients for approval, and contributes to these products during the editing process; 
  • Develops new service offerings in collaboration with the COO, CEO, and other team members;
  • Looks for opportunities to provide additional services to assigned clients and collaborate with AMC Management when appropriate to discuss the clients’ needs and develop new service offerings.

Fundraising Strategy: You communicate, lead, and manage successful fundraising strategies for our clients. You use an asset-based approach to fundraising and nonprofit management and are aware of all AMC grant writing and fundraising principles as they relate to your work. You understand the language and principles important to your assigned clients and communities. You work to understand the ‘big picture’ for your clients and design winning grant proposals, fundraising plans, and other projects that fit within that larger strategy. 


Project Management: You keep your team on task while providing a supportive environment, meet all project deadlines and deliverables, and guide and manage staff and client expectations. 


Business Math: You are familiar with basic math and accounting principles for nonprofit organizations and can advise clients on building organizational, project, and program budgets for proposals. You can create spreadsheets and tables that inform program design. You understand key nonprofit accounting documents such as Form 990, financial statements, organizational and project budgets, and budget reporting basics.  


Communication and Consulting: You are an insightful communicator with a high level of emotional intelligence and the ability to convey complex ideas in a simple way. You can regularly distill big-picture goals, ideas, and challenges into strategic initiatives for clients. You are comfortable communicating with clients and team members about finance and budget creation, monitoring and evaluation, and strategic planning.  


Software Literacy: You use all of AMC’s and our clients’ various software platforms and navigate other online platforms (Asana, Google Workplace, Foundation Directory Online, Salesforce, Sharepoint, Instrumentl, Grantstation, Dropbox, etc.) effectively and maneuver with ease across and between these systems.  


Other Information


Work Environment: This position leads teams and works with clients across multiple U.S. time zones. Professionalism and discretion are required. This role routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers. The essential functions of the job require that the individual working in this position remain standing or sitting in a stationary position for most of the day and move about within an office environment to access file cabinets and the aforementioned office equipment.


Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position with an annual salary of $78,850. In keeping with AMC’s Pay Equity Policy, the salary for this position is non-negotiable.


  • Paid, Unlimited Vacation Time (UVT): after the completion of a 90-day introductory onboarding period.
  • Paid Holidays in keeping with the City/County of San Francisco’s Holidays  
  • December Holiday break: Week off over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
  • Paid Sick Time: 1 hour earned per 30 hours worked starting on the first day of employment. You can begin utilizing earned sick time 60 calendar days after you begin working.
  • Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA): Staff are eligible to participate in ICHRA on the first of the month 30 calendar days after their first day of employment and receive a $500 AMC employer contribution. Staff can also set aside additional pre-tax salary funds to pay for medical health insurance premiums. 
  • Elective Dependent Care FSA: Staff are eligible to elect to participate in this benefit and set aside pre-tax funds to pay for child or elderly care costs on the first of the month 30 calendar days after their first day of employment.
  • Transportation FSA: On the first of the month 30 calendar days after their first day of employment, staff are eligible to receive employer-provided funds (and the option to contribute additional personal funds) to commute to work using public transportation. (Benefit is only offered for San Francisco-based staff)
  • Home Office Budget - AMC will reimburse you for home office costs, including but not limited to internet, office supplies, etc. - up to $200 per year.
  • 401K Retirement: All full and part-time employees are automatically enrolled in AMC’s 401(k) plan after six months of employment. AMC will contribute 100% of your elective deferral contributions up to 1% of compensation plus 50% of your elective deferral contributions over 1% up to 6% of compensation.
  • New Business Bonus: You will be eligible to earn a bonus of 10% of the initial contract amount on any new client that you introduce to AMC, paid quarterly during the initial year or project period. New business bonus payments are capped at $5,000 per client. New clients are defined as those who are not already in our business development pipeline, have not discussed our services with us or have not yet received a proposal. These are organizations that you encounter outside of your normal working hours or responsibilities at AMC. 
  • Performance Bonus: Staff members who satisfactorily meet or exceed your performance and profitability metrics will receive a $2,000 bonus. 50% will be paid out in August based on January - June performance, and 50% will be paid out in January based on July—December performance.
  • Professional Development (Association Memberships, Books, Webinars, Conferences etc.): $500 per year; note: conference fees above $500 must be discussed in advance and approved separately.
