BSE is developing a modern media company that champions the spirit and demeanour of Brooklyn and amplifies it to the world. Rooted in digital storytelling across all channels and formats, we will cultivate a highly-engaged global audience by reaffirming the connective threads that tie sports, music, fashion and sneakers, and food not just to Brooklyn geographically, but in how they’re embedded into its DNA.
We are assembling a team of agile, culturally-fluent, entrepreneurial-minded talent who will craft the vision strategy and tactics to bring this initiative to life. We believe that our team should mirror the diversity of the Brooklyn communities that have crafted culture, so we can build content that authentically reflects and resonates beyond the borough’s borders.
BSE is seeking an expert newsroom leader to help craft and implement its editorial coverage and supervise its daily operations. Working closely with the VP, Content Strategy on defining and implementing editorial strategy, including programming the calendar and tentpoles, the Managing Editor will help manage a team of freelance editors and writers covering music, sports, fashion and style, and food through a range of editorial formats. They’ll be assigning, editing, and publishing stories and will often be the final set of eyes on a story before it runs. The strongest candidates will have a strong background in journalism, web publishing, and editing, with a focus on delivering high-quality, thoughtful, and engaging content. This role is people-centric and will play a vital role in launching and guiding our editorial voice.

What You Will Do
- Oversee our digital editorial strategy, recruiting and developing a team of freelance writers and editors to produce daily coverage and features that drive brand authority and audience growth. Be able to articulate and complete a clear POV on stories and reporting for a global audience.
- Work closely with the content leadership team to develop and implement editorial calendars and brand tentpoles, ensuring timely and relevant coverage of local and global topics
- Handle editorial pitching process, editing and writing as necessary
- Monitor, analyze, and implement new strategies based on data and insights (SEO, traffic, sentiment, engagement, PVs) and optimize accordingly
- Coordinate all elements of internal content review
- Use Google Analytics to supervise performance of content and advise decisions
- Oversee the implementation and optimization of the CMS, working with the product and UX teams to ensure efficient operations
- 6+ years experience in digital media and publishing with at least 3 years of experience and working with and editing writers
- Significant experience, writing, editing, and completing feature stories and editorial packages
- Strong understanding of the social media landscape inclusive of platform-specific strategies and processes
- You have high-standards and understand the fine balance played between being first and being the best
- Passionate about content trends with knowledge of current and emerging social products, editorial formats, emerging creators, and platform features
- You have a strong grasp of and regular working intimacy using content management systems
- Proficiency in analyzing web metrics and data, using tools like Google Analytics, Looker, and Chartbeat
- Experience in the branded content space and working with sales and revenue organizations is very beneficial
- Deep knowledge of Brooklyn and New York City culture is strongly preferred
- Experience in Adobe Creative Suite
- Willingness to jump in when and where needed in service of team success
- History of excelling in a fast-paced environment, supporting multiple collaborators
- Excellent verbal and written communication, including refined presentation skills
- Strong attention to detail and project management capabilities
- Ability to develop important, trust-based working relationships
- Willingness to work some weekends and nights
