Job Summary

The Materials Manager will direct overall manufacturing / production activities for the holistic value stream and develop budget to support manufacturing / production objectives. This position will spearhead the development and implementation of best-in-class manufacturing processes to drive continuous improvement, improve competitiveness and optimize product value, including manufacturing systems processes, materials management and supply chain strategy. The Materials Manager formulates and installs standard practices based on comparative studies of methods and costs.

This role will provide effective leadership, guidance and communication to the Operations team and create a work environment conducive to high morale and motivation and accomplishment of KPIs. Becoming a strong customer liaison as well as accountable for the Safety, Cost, Quality and Delivery of the value stream will be a high priority in this role.

  • Directs on-time delivery and presentation of all manufactured and purchased components based on Master Production Schedule and Value Stream Assignments
  • Leads SIOP and responsible for all materials, inventory, order release, flow and shipments
  • Supervises several subordinate Value Stream Planners, Buyers, and Production Coordinators
  • Provides Materials team with effective leadership, guidance and communication
  • Procures inventory items to support Value Stream Master Production Schedule and ensure on-time delivery
  • Responsible for releasing and tracking internally manufactured inventory items in support of the Value Stream Master Production Schedule and ensuring on-time delivery
  • Spearheads transition to Material Pull System
  • Coordinates with Value Stream Material Presenters to ensure that all materials are supplied to the production floor to maximize throughput and quality for the Value Stream operations. This parts presentation may include, but is not limited to pull cart layout, point of use stocking, part labeling, flow racks, and supplier kitting
  • Provides detailed, daily updates to Value Stream on component availability status of open and upcoming orders
  • Delegates daily work assignments to team of Value Stream buyers and production planners to ensure timely ordering, follow up, delivery, and presentation of all manufactured and purchased components.
  • Responsible for managing inventory levels for Value Stream components and Work in Process Inventory based upon management policies for inventory turns and management of working capital
  • Work with engineering, Strategic Sourcing Specialist, supplier partners, manufacturing, quality, and sales personnel to analyze current purchased/manufactured product and initiate projects for cost improvement
  • Initiate lead-time reduction techniques at the supplier to improve response time and reduce inventory and cost throughout the supply chain
  • Leads projects, Kaizen Events, or Barrier Removal Teams, to support continuous improvement efforts
  • Maintains cooperation with Manufacturing, Accounting, Marketing, Engineering, and Materials management without direct line authority

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Strong Lean background
  • Ability to create master production schedules as well as shop floor scheduling
  • Strong leadership skills demonstrated by championing accountability, maximizing team and individual strengths, seeking and implementing change, and aligning with critical business objectives.
  • Sense of urgency as well analytical problem-solving ability; process oriented
  • Commitment to achieve key performance metrics and drive for continuous improvement
  • Vision and purpose, creates and communicates compelling vision and direction, inspires, motivates
  • Customer focus, meets expectations, internally and externally, forms partnerships
  • Proficient computer skills, e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation graphics
  • Good organizational skills; able to attract/select high talent people
  • Strong presence on production floor continuously driving improvement

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, Engineering, or Equivalent
  • 8 -10 years of management experience in a progressive manufacturing environment
  • 10 years of experience in Purchasing or Engineering Field. Prior Supervisory or Team Lead experience preferred
  • Lean Manufacturing advanced manufacturing concepts experience required
  • APICS certification and/or general knowledge of flexographic printing processes and equipment would be a plus
  • Trained in TQ and Advanced Manufacturing Concepts
  • Cross-functional experience in operations and at least one other functional area
  • Quality Indoctrination Training

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Climate controlled office environment, no physical discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise and the like. May have limited exposure to manufacturing areas that require the usage of PPE.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Frequently required to sit. Occasional walking, standing, stooping and kneeling. Frequently lift up to 10 pounds, occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
