About The Opportunity

SWCA is looking for a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Project Level Geospatial Scientist for SWCA’s Midwest-Northeast (MWNE) operations. This position will primarily be responsible for GIS services for a single large client in SWCA’s Portland, ME office, however there will also be opportunity to work on other small- and medium-sized projects for the MWNE GIS team.

Under this job requisition, we may hire for any of the following positions:

  • Assistant Project Geospatial Scientist- Typically up to 3 years of experience and expertise
  • Associate Project Geospatial Scientist- Typically up to 5 years of experience and expertise
  • Project Geospatial Scientist- Typically up to 7 years of experience and expertise

This position is available for distributed work in the US. However, it is strongly preferred that the applicant be in or near Portland, ME, or Boston, MA.

What You Will Accomplish

The Project Level Geospatial Scientist will provide GIS services for a large client, primarily, but will also work with their supervisor and the MWNE GIS team to provide GIS services for other clients and projects as needed. They will work with the MWNE GIS Team Lead to ensure deliverable consistency, quality of GIS products, and proper load-leveling within the MWNE GIS team.

The applicant must have a demonstrated ability to critically evaluate changing client and project manager priorities and break down high-level projects into targeted deliverables. The applicant must be comfortable working with different stakeholders and be open-minded to new and changing approaches to ensure the desired solution is achieved.

Responsibilities Include

  • Demonstrate technical proficiency in geospatial sciences through continuing education, training, presentations, or accreditations.
  • Lead small to moderately sized projects/tasks from start to finish, with guidance.
  • Use experience and technical knowledge for small to moderately sized proposal efforts.
  • Execute technical tasks through self and others.
  • Perform complex geoprocessing, modeling, or spatial analysis in coordination with subject matter experts and senior team members.
  • Help ensure the overall quality of work is consistent with SWCA's standards and practices alongside other team members.
  • Produce moderately complex cartographic quality maps adhering to SWCA or client mapping templates.
  • Manage large, complex datasets.
  • Design, create, maintain, and perform QA/QC of geospatial databases.
  • Independently troubleshoot complex problems for resource teams.
  • May supervise one to two junior staff or temporarily direct the work of others.
  • Be an active member in technical/industry organizations.
  • Apply knowledge of environmental resources and regulations to the job.
  • Comply with the safety plan.

Experience And Qualifications For Success

We seek a team member who possess demonstrated experience in product management, environmental consulting, and mobile data collection. We seek the following specific qualities:

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Anthropology, Biology, Environmental Science, or related field with an emphasis in GIS (or GIS certificate)
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a mid-level to senior GIS analyst or similar position with demonstrated increasing levels of professional-level responsibility and leadership
  • Experience in the design, development, implementation, and administration of GIS systems is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cartography and computer mapping including design principles and understanding map creation procedures in ArcGIS.
  • Demonstrated experience with GPS technology, field data collection techniques, data integration to a GIS, and troubleshooting of equipment and digital files
  • Ability to produce presentations, and/or written protocol of methods for reports or within metadata to replicate GIS-related analyses or modeling techniques applied on projects is strongly preferred
  • Prior knowledge and experience with Enterprise geodatabases, creating database schemas, domains, ArcGIS Enterprise/Portal/Online web applications, network analysis, and/or application development
  • Working knowledge of Esri ArcGIS Online, Field Maps, and Survey123
  • Completed all GIS-related aspects of a project, from budget preparation/scoping to pre-field preparations, to geospatial analyses, to final report maps and calculations
  • Demonstrated ability of data transfer, data analysis, data mining, and data inventory using software applications (e.g. Windows Explorer, Excel, Access, ESRI ArcGIS)
  • Demonstrated experience with ArcGIS Pro 2.x and ArcMap 10.x as well as knowledge of cartography and computer mapping including design principles and understanding map creation procedures in ArcGIS required
  • General understanding of basic statistics, and geometric math computations (e.g., summary, distributions, frequency, min/max, range, angles, distance, slope, degrees, area)

PREFERRED Or HELPFUL

  • Master’s degree in Geography, Cartography, Archaeology, Biology, Environmental Science, or related field with an emphasis in GIS
  • GISP or similar professional GIS certification
  • Previous experience working on GIS projects/tasks in the environmental consulting industry supporting projects with natural and cultural resource issues related to wind, transportation, oil/gas, and/or renewables projects.
  • Experience in development of analytical models related to natural or cultural resource processes
  • A working understanding of agency internal processes and procedures and positive existing relationships with federal land management and regulatory agencies, such as the BLM, USFS, NPS, BOR, DOE, DOT, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and/or U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).
  • Knowledge of Python, .NET, Java, PHP, HTML

In Portland, ME, an employee in this positions can expect the following rates: Assistant Project Geospatial Scientist $26.50/hr. to $34.00/hr.; Associate Project Geospatial Scientist $61,880.00/yr. to $79,560.00/yr.; Project Geospatial Scientist $68,640.00/yr to $88,400.00/yr., depending on experience, geographic locations, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.
