Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Business Services, the Senior Accountant is responsible for the preparation of financial reporting, including, but not limited to, maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. The Senior Accountant analyzes financial data leading to and including the preparation of annual financial statements in compliance with JSCC and TBR policies and procedures and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). The position organizes the preparation of the Proposed, Revised, and Estimated published budget summary and analysis in compliance with JSCC and TBR policies as well as keeping the budget in balance on a continual basis.

The position prepares general ledger journal entries, executes month-end close procedures, performs account reconciliations and analyzes balances appropriateness. The Senior Accountant is required to meet all scheduled monthly financial reporting deadlines and provide accurate and timely analysis and research on assigned departments or entities. Ensures that all accounting duties are compliant with the established fiscal policies and procedures of the College, the Tennessee Board of Regents and the State of Tennessee. This holds the responsibility for meeting the goals of the College consistent with an understanding of academic accounting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and in compliance with GASB accounting standards. The Senior Accountant must perform research for consistency and accuracy and to ensure that the institution is in compliance with policies and procedures.

Job Duties

  • 50% - Supervise workflow of accounting personnel to include recruiting, recommending, and assisting in the evaluation of assigned staff in accordance with College and department policies and procedures. Manages and submits the personnel budget process for the College. Post entries pertinent to budget revisions. Review accountant I and II submissions for accuracy and completeness. Performs general ledger reconciliations on various liability accounts. Assists campus with inquiries related to various general ledger transactions. Ensures all financial and accounting data is maintained and accurate. Prepares and reviews account reconciliations. Researches accounting issues and recommends accounting treatment. Organizes files and scanning of documents. - (Essential)
  • 35% - Responsible for advanced level reporting and reconciliation. Prepares College audit schedules, financial statements, and statistical data related to the annual audit and Annual Financial Report. Prepares complex journal entries and supporting documentation. Assists with special projects and ad hoc reporting. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Participates in monthly, quarterly and annual close processes. Prepares monthly variance analysis for management review. Reconcile payroll, including but not limited to tax, garnishment, direct deposit rejects and deletions, overpayment adjustments, and retirement adjustments. - (Essential)

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education in Accounting, Finance, or related field. Ability to demonstrate progressive experience as an accountant. Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and GASB accounting standards is imperative. Experience with proven detail-oriented work style in collaboration with effective written and verbal communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with a high degree of proficiency in Excel and Word. Three (3) years related work experience in bookkeeping or accounting.

Preferred Qualifications

Public accounting experience preferred. CPA, CGFM, or other related licensure. Ellucian systems.

Working conditions are that of a normal working office environment. Lifting of 10-15 pound on a daily basis, constant computer work, standing, and sitting for long periods is required.

Pay Rate: 54,085 - 67,607 Annual salary depending on eligible experience which is defined by the current compensation plan.
