Summary

The Student Counselor assists students in resolving personal and academic problems that produce emotional stress and adversely affect their educational progress. The position reports to the Associate Dean of Students, Student Counseling and Academic Support.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Meet with students one-on-one to discuss personal, emotional, and other student concerns and develop strategies to improve the emotional well-being of students.
  • Develop educational/supportive materials for students to help disperse information regarding solutions to common personal and academic issues students experience
  • Assess and develop treatment plans and modify plans for students continued success. Refer for outside care as needed.
  • Maintain required documentation, progress notes, triage paperwork, assessment, email and phone exchanges, and collateral contacts in the electronic medical record.
  • Develop and provide outreach programs for the campus community including, but not limited to presentations to faculty/staff, classes and student groups.
  • Be present and available to offer emotional support to students experiencing unanticipated crises.
  • Provide consultations as need to faculty and staff regarding student concerns.
  • Provide psycho-educational presentations to faculty,staff, and students as assigned.
  • Develop and facilitate therapeutic groups to students.
  • Attend weekly clinical case consultation meetings and present cases as needed.
  • Attend weekly staff meeting with the clinical and academic support team.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education And/or Experience

A Master’s Degree in Counseling or Social Work or equivalent from a University or College is required. Must be a Licensed Professional Counselor or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations. Required to have 3-5 years of individual, group/outreach, and crisis intervention experience.

Computer Skills

Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook).
