Summary

The Technical Director is responsible for coordinating the technical requirements of all auditorium events and managing the technical resources of the auditorium and theater facilities at the school, and working with the Theatre Director within stacked courses (Design For The Stage, Technical Theatre).

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises students and the high school auditorium and studio theater.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE

Minimum of a Bachelor of Arts degree from four-year college or university with an emphasis in Technical Theatre, or equivalent professional experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

The Technical Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Build and maintain a relationship and shared vision with the Theatre Director.
  • Design and build scenery, design lighting, sound and props, and mount them for the stage.
  • Coordinate the technical demands of all productions, performances and events (both during and outside school hours) using the auditorium.
  • Coordinate the technical demands of single-date events as needed by the greater school community into the overall tech schedule.
  • Maintain safety and efficiency of all auditorium technical facilities; physical plant, stage rigging, construction area, lighting and sound equipment.
  • Maintain an accurate master calendar of all events in the auditorium and serve as a resource for staff/administration in planning events.
  • Develop a working relationship with the Building Manager and crew to support safety requirements for students and auditorium/theater spaces.
  • Develop a working relationship with the building IT department to support auditorium technology in building/district presentations.
  • Foster a professional, collegial relationship with all production coordinators and school personnel involved in productions, programs, courses and events.
  • Work with students who have a range of academic levels and interpersonal capacities to develop individual skills as well as a group work ethic within the student technical production team.
  • Coordinate and supervise student technical crews and develop a training program to build an ongoing student technical production team. Develop a cohort of students who are trained to meet the demands of technical theater production and work effectively as a team.
  • Attend all production meetings for all productions, concerts and performances.
  • Direct and support technical requirements for all Fine Arts Department performances.
  • Plan and supervise all set, prop and lighting movement during rehearsals.
  • Oversee house staff during performances, run all crews on stage. The Technical Director is responsible for maintaining the function of the performance.
  • Coordinate post-production strike and cleanup of all facilities, materials and equipment within two days of the performance.
  • Attending staff meetings.
  • Demonstrating employee responsibilities in completing duties accurately and promptly.
  • Manage and maintain a budget.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of construction and set design
  • Working knowledge of lighting design
  • Working knowledge of stage rigging
  • Working knowledge of audio and sound reinforcement
  • Working knowledge of makeup design and application
  • Clear understanding of professional standards of stage safety
  • Possess effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with students and adults in a positive manner.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Possess common sense, problem-solving skills and reasoning ability to appropriately deal with day to day instruction and supervisory situations.
  • Maintain flexible working hours which may include nights and weekends.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with colleagues that supports a cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of employee, student and other sensitive District information.
  • Ability to set goals and establish methods for achieving these goals.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to set and adhere to a production budget.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, bend, write, type, speak, and listen. In addition the employee may occasionally be required to bend, twist, reach and climb. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, peripheral, distant vision, and working in low light settings.

The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet/moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with the public and other staff. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.
