Job Description And Duties

This is the entry, first working, and journey level of professional surveying work at Caltrans. Transportation Surveyors must have knowledge, experience and familiarity with a wide variety of professional field and office land surveying equipment, tools and procedures with which they will perform a wide variety of professional land surveying work in either an office and/or field setting. A Transportation Surveyor will work either (1) under the direction of a licensed land surveyor (Range A through C) or (2) at the licensed professional level in a responsible charge capacity (including signing and sealing documents) (Range D). Transportation Surveyors work under the supervision of a Senior Transportation Surveyor or Transportation Surveyor Party Chief but may also take direction from a lead worker. Travel may be required. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required.

Our dynamic team performs transportation surveying including stationary and mobile lidar scanning, geodetic control work, data extraction, boundary resolution and mapping, drone data collection, geospatial analysis and more! We work throughout the broad spectrum of wonders and challenges of the nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Solano and Contra Costa). This position works as member of a field survey crew however, based on annual workload, delivery commitments, and seasonal needs, from time-to-time assignments may vary in office and field environments. Travel and overtime may be required.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Surveyor (Caltrans) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. • The position(s) require(s) a(n) CA Land Surveyor License. You will be required to provide a copy of your license prior to being hired.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
• Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications based on possession of an education, a Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT), or Land Surveyor (LS) certificate must include a copy of your degree/transcripts, LSIT, or LS certificate along with your State application (STD. 678) to be considered for this position.
  
  

Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Land Surveying License issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, this is not required.
