- Rushing the interview process can lead to costly mistakes. For example, we've all hired someone just because we needed some extra help, but hiring and haste often results in mismatched hires who soon leave or underperform. So before interviewing, you need to do some internal checks to make sure you hire once and hire right. First, be sure you understand the core skills and attributes necessary for success in the role. Hopefully, you define that as you wrote the job description and posted it. Next, it's time to screen candidates with the top three to five critical success factors in mind. For example, when I was internal HR, I discovered that one of our file clerks was just stuffing files into the shelf or hiding some client files inside others to lighten her load. While she didn't think much of it, if someone needed a file and couldn't find it, it was a real problem that turned into perceived poor customer service.
