Selecting treatments and interventions

- [Instructor] Treating patients is, of course, at the center of what doctors, nurses and medical professionals do and aside from the enormous skill and experience needed to carry out the treatment successfully, there's the issue of simply deciding what you're going to do in the first place, that is selecting what treatment or intervention should be used. There's always more than one way to treat a given illness or injury, and a huge range of factors play into the decision of which approach to take. But treatment selection, with all its complexity, can be seen as a form of classification where symptoms are matched to a treatment category. And fortunately, classification is one of the things that data science does best. It can be helpful to think of some analogies in the data science world where complex interconnected data is used to make a specific recommendation. Of course, none of these have the genuine life or death…
