Target boosted by discount shoppers
Target reported a surprise jump in sales Tuesday for the holiday period, as heavy discounting attracted bargain-hungry consumers to the retail chain. Same-store sales rose by nearly 1% in the fiscal quarter ending Jan. 28 — Wall Street had expected a drop of 1.6% — and the company beat profit estimates for the first time in nearly a year. Target said consumers were increasingly focused on necessities, shifting spending away from electronics, furnishings and apparel and toward groceries and household essentials.
- Target expects a tough fiscal 2023, predicting sales will see either a low single-digit increase or decline.
- Heavy discounting helped the retailer clear out warehouses loaded with goods ordered at the height of the pandemic, with discretionary inventories dropping about 13% year-on-year.

Excellent recap. The sentiment that 2022 was an incredibly challenging retail year should not be underestimated. All companies are trying to find their path through it. I am on the belief some great innovation will be born (ads, supply chain, etc.) but Target has a loyal customer base (you can see it in the traffic data) that may be spending a little less but continue to visit. Most don't have that luxury. Thanks Rick Watson - great insight.
