Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: A Shared History of Resilience and Unity As we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander (#AAPI) Heritage Month, it's important to recognize the interconnected stories of resilience, strength, and unity that bind our diverse communities together. The AAPI community, like the #AfricanAmerican community, has faced significant challenges and overcome tremendous obstacles throughout history. From the early #Chinese immigrants who helped build the transcontinental railroad to the #Japanese Americans who endured internment during World War II, the AAPI community has shown remarkable resilience. Similarly, the African American community has a rich history of overcoming adversity, from the fight against slavery and segregation to the ongoing struggle for civil rights and equality. These shared experiences highlight the importance of solidarity and mutual support among all marginalized communities. By understanding and honoring our intertwined histories, we can build a stronger, more inclusive future for everyone. Here’s how we can celebrate and support both communities: 1. **Educate Ourselves**: Learn about the contributions and challenges faced by both the AAPI and African American communities. 2. **Amplify Voices**: Share stories, books, and media that highlight the achievements and struggles of these communities. 3. **Support Businesses**: Patronize AAPI and African American-owned businesses. 4. **Stand in Solidarity**: Advocate for policies and initiatives that promote equality and justice for all. October is Filipino American History Month. As a half-Filipino American, I’m going to honor the observance by committing to three (3) things: 1. Striving to cancel Filipino invisibility in personal and professional spaces. Olivia Rodrigo and Bruno Mars are not the only Filipino rockstars in their industry or otherwise (though they are wonderful and can sing)! Major achievements have been made by Filipinos in US business and culture, and there’s room for their celebration and acknowledgement as part of the #AsianAmerican demo. 2. Amplifying voices of the #diaspora -- to that end, I’m proud to be a founding member of my company’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) impact committee designing programming to strengthen our awareness and foster inclusivity globally. 3. Making Filipino American History! The model minority myth is real, and I’ve committed to gently decolonizing my mindset towards radical authenticity so I can help others do the same. This is my first #FAHM since visiting the Philippines for the first time in 23 years, so this is a responsibility I feel strongly right now. ACT creates awareness of Asian contributions, promotes professional development, and enhances an understanding of Asian culture at Xerox. 👏 Trailblazers and Achievers AAPI individuals have made significant strides in various fields. Leaders like Vice President Kamala Harris, Ambassador Katherine Tai, and Dr. Arati Prabhakar have shattered glass ceilings. 🚀 🙌 Addressing Challenges Despite their immense contributions, AAPI communities face challenges. We must stand united against discrimination and ensure dignity and respect for all. 🤝 📈 Advancing Equity and Inclusion This year, we launched the first-ever National Strategy to Advance Equity, Justice, and Opportunity for AAPI Communities.   Embrace diversity, honor resilience, and amplify voices for a brighter future. 🌈 #AAPIHeritageMonth #InclusionMatters #Belonging #Inclusion #Diversity #AAPICommunity

We recognize Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, a time to honor and celebrate the invaluable contributions that generations of Americans from Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander backgrounds made to our nation's history, society and culture.     Bayer’s Business Resource Group BASIA (Bayer Asian Society Inclusion Alliance) theme for this year’s #AANHPI celebration is embracing resilience. The American Psychological Association defines resilience as the process and outcome of successfully adapting to challenging life experiences, primarily through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands. The American story, a testament to resilience and strength, is intricately woven with the voices and legacies of AANHPI individuals. Why We Celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month in May This May, we take a moment to recognize the incredible contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) to the fabric of the United States. But why May? The story goes back to 1978 when Congressman Frank Horton proposed a week in May to celebrate Asian/Pacific American heritage. Over a decade later, Congress permanently designated May as AANHPI Heritage Month.
