How Frontline Actions Shape Your Company's Narrative Every company's story is told by those on the front lines. In 2021, during a project at my plant, I had a firsthand experience of how a single interaction can significantly influence this narrative. My plant engineer and I had brainstormed an cost-saving idea: to fabricate our pump skids and source parts directly from the manufacturer. One crucial component was the base, for which we ordered a 12" steel channel from a local steel company. The delivery day arrived with its own set of challenges. we were unloading a truck on the loading dock, but the truck driver was in a hurry and was unwilling to wait. So he offloaded the $1,500 piece of steel on the opposite side of the road and left. This incident, for better or worse, shaped our perception of that steel company. The driver's behavior, a single frontline interaction, left a lasting impression on us about the entire company. As a recruiter, I delve deep into how businesses are perceived based on these frontline interactions. It's a bittersweet realization that sometimes, the smallest actions can either enhance or tarnish a company's image. Every so often we work with people who are as curious as us to see “just what is possible”. Kevin Anderson was masterminding such a project when I first worked with him. It's Kevin's story and it is a good one, it turned out to be truly revolutionary: “The first time I worked with Martyn was 7 years ago. I was tasked with putting a new production line into an existing factory. We had first stabilized and fixed the critical problems at site to justify spending money on a new production line, but I also saw this as the opportunity to change expectations and show the team what “good” looked like. Martyn came in and worked with me to push the boundaries on the ‘art of the possible’ and we actually changed expectations, establishing the new line in ways that allowed us to run it separately from the rest of the factory and making the new production line team accountable for their line. It was revolutionary! The buy-in we got took that team from non-engaged workers carrying out repetitive tasks, to a self managing team responsible for and reporting their line performance. They were doing their own planning, maintenance, stock management and work order activities. We changed the environment on that new line and it worked. Why did you join the RBP Team? When I was a pressroom supervisor, one of my former pressmen Carl Ruehle [one of my mentors actually] went to work at RBP, and highly recommended them. How do you achieve success in your role? When I first came to RBP, my goal was to share the years of knowledge I had acquired with others in the industry. To be successful in any profession one needs to listen to the people you work with, and become actively involved in attaining their goals, not yours. What do you love most about what you do? For me, interacting with various personalities is what I enjoy the most. Many of my clients [some over twenty years] have become more than customers, they are friends. While communicating regularly with my customers, I continue to learn from them as well. Tell us a surprising fact, or fun thing about yourself. There is this fascination I have always had with the life of Native Americans. Not sure why, but I carved four totem poles through the years. I gave one to my son, and one to my friend. Perhaps not so surprising, is that I enjoy yard work, duck hunting and the outdoors. Is there anything else you would like to add? Everyone I have ever known in the Printing Industry works very hard.
