Nvidia's next project: a special unit devoted to creating custom chips including artificial intelligence processors for other companies. Nvidia is both responding to "exploding" demand for the custom parts and looking to protect its dominance over the global semiconductor market. Nvidia commands 80% of the market for high-end AI chips. Its market value tripled in 2023 and is up another 40% since the turn of the year. The wider custom-chip market could hit $10 billion this year, per one research firm cited by Reuters. Custom chips made for specific needs can cut down on the energy, cost and time needed for production of "all-purpose" chips, like Nvidia's popular H100 and A100. A single H100 chip can sell for up to $100,000. OpenAI's Sam Altman is looking to raise up to $7 trillion to boost global production of AI chips. Meta is developing its own custom chip, Artemis, to reduce its reliance on Nvidia

‘NVIDIA is past tense,’ says Indian security official. For him, the hottest AI chip company is... In a recent meeting, Anshuman Tripathi mentioned about a latest technology which could possibly be the next big thing in AI chips. In the realm of AI semiconductors, Cerebras Systems has emerged as a formidable contender, thanks to its innovative wafer-scale integration technology. 🔹Wafer-scale integration refers to the use of an entire silicon wafer as a single chip. 🔹This approach eliminates the need for complex interconnects between smaller chips, leading to improved performance and efficiency. 🔹Cerebras' innovative technology allows for massive parallelism, enabling faster computations and more efficient AI processing. The company has previously won a deal to supply G42, the government-backed firm in the United Arab Emirates and recently said that it will supply a supercomputing system to Aleph Alpha, a German technology startup that will use it to develop AI for the German military. Cerebras is reportedly headed to an initial public offer at $4 billion valuation. NVIDIA's market capitalization is 550 times higher currently. Over the past year, NVIDIA's market value has tripled to over $2 trillion as it became the poster child of the AI boom, thanks to its leading position in high-end semiconductors used to drive chatbots and the like. A Cerebras WS-2 wafer has 40GB of memory, and costs somewhere in the ballpark of several million dollars. This can work well for some use cases, but training a large transformer model like GPT4 requires vastly more memory so products like Nvidia's H100/H200 or AMD's MI300 are far more economical with several times the memory at a tiny fraction of the price. Cerebras may be making strides with partnerships of their own, but they have a long way to go to catch up to NVIDIA's level of influence and market penetration. Will Nvidia work along cerebras and produce the next big AI chip revolution or will it just acquire it? Share your thoughts. #AIRevolution #TechInnovation #FutureTech
