Analysing the potential of using waste heat, generated in data centers in buildings. We are excited to share that the first deliverable of #HEATWISE's WP3 has been finalized and submitted to the #EuropeanUnion for approval. ✍ This deliverable has been led by BUILD - Department of the Built Environment, By og Miljø at Aalborg University, and has focused on analysing the potential for using waste heat in the four pilot buildings of TOFAS, Empa, Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center / Poznańskie Centrum Superkomputerowo-Sieciowe (PCSS), and Aalborg University. 🏢 The main conclusion was that many of the pilots had significant potential for covering the buildings' heating energy need using the waste heat (up to 80% of the total heating energy need) but that the potential is highly dependent on the temperature of the hot water supplied from the data center and the point in the building where it is supplied. 🏢 In the figure, the potential across different supply temperatures and systems can be seen. The largest potential is seen to be in the ventilation and heating systems. #HorizonEurope #Datacenter #Wasteheat #WasteHeatUtilization #Sustainability #SERI

With the backdrop of the Canberra Light Rail construction, ENE.HUB (an Indara company) hosted an UrbanTech Roundtable with government, industry and city advocacy representatives yesterday in the nation's capital. Our discussion centred on a series of emerging issues we have identified as 'slipping through the cracks' in our city shaping practices, and policy making. These issues are possibly best replayed as questions, and included: // How might government be more empowered to participate in the planning for wireless #digitalconnectivity? // How can digital infrastructure be more integrated with other critical infrastructure, like road and rail, water and electricity, land development and precinct renewal? // Who is joining the dots on some emerging public realm issues with respect to 5G mmWave deployment and what does it mean for #urbandesign and #landscapearchitecture? // How do our digital and data investments contribute to building #digitaltwin capability for Canberra? // What collaborative arrangements, co-investment models and shared value frameworks can we experiment with to generate better public realm outcomes in the digital and #circulareconomy? The collective view in the room was that digital, data and the built environment interests are bumping up against each other in different ways, and at pace. And stewarding digital and data as an accelerator for sustainable built environment outcomes is preferred, rather than having 'digital done to' the built environment. Thank you to our friends from the ACT Government, local consultancies and the Australian Local Government Association for participating.

At the Data Centre Design Engineering & Construction Summit held on June 11-12 in Barcelona, Spain, Daniele Paci, a Scientific Officer at the European Commission, delivered an insightful presentation titled "Navigating Data Centre Regulation and Standards Impacting Design, Operation, and Sustainability." During his presentation, Mr. Paci explored the EU directives that significantly influence data centre design and operations, emphasizing the importance of adhering to these regulations to ensure compliance and efficiency. He discussed the critical role of sustainability within the framework of the European Green Deal, underscoring the need for data centres to align their operations with these ambitious environmental goals. Mr. Paci highlighted various labels and certifications, such as the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres, which serve as benchmarks for sustainable practices within the industry. Additionally, he elaborated on the use of the BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) for validating the sustainability efforts of data centres, ensuring they meet high environmental standards. Finally, he provided strategic insights on how to meet and exceed energy efficiency requirements in data centre design, offering practical solutions and innovative approaches to enhance operational sustainability. Mr. Paci's presentation was a comprehensive guide to navigating the complex regulatory landscape while promoting sustainable and efficient data centre operations. #DataCentreSummit #Sustainability #DataCentreDesign #EURegulations #GreenDeal #EnergyEfficiency #BREEAM #DataCentreStandards #EuropeanCommission

Positive Zero is delighted to announce the publication of a new research paper in the Building and Environment journal. Title: “Challenges and Opportunities of Low-Cost Sensors in Capturing the Impacts of Construction Activities on Neighborhood Air Quality”. Our research deployed twelve low-cost sensors across various locations to monitor PM2.5 levels, revealing the nuanced ways in which construction activities and heavy-duty traffic contribute to local air quality changes. By analyzing data through time series, spatial heterogeneity, and spectral analysis, we identified localized hot spots of pollution, underscoring the importance of targeted interventions to mitigate health risks in impacted communities. This publication marks a significant step forward in our commitment to advancing air quality monitoring and environmental justice. We extend our gratitude to the community members, stakeholders, and the City of Toronto for their invaluable collaboration. The economic approach to #datacentre design decision-making has evolved to consider the whole lifecycle, but only in terms of total cost of ownership. Yet, research from Circular Ecology and the Inventory of Carbon & Energy database suggests that 10-20% of #embodiedcarbon can be eliminated from #construction projects with no increase in cost. Our white paper “Embodied carbon considerations for data centers” evaluates the potential found in whole life carbon approaches, which need to begin from the design stage. With evidence in the benefits of a Cradle to Cradle basis, this paper provides the guidance needed to reduce emissions, without impacting revenue. Download here: https://lnkd.in/eDaMwfGt
