There is a paradox in the NHS: staff numbers have grown by ~20% since 2019, yet acute activity has actually declined. This has led to an intense focus on workforce numbers and productivity. But look internationally, and you find a similar story across Europe, North America and Asia. This appears to be a new feature of global healthcare systems. So instead of focusing on raw numbers, we should instead concentrate on how we can support our workforce to deliver real and sustained improvements in activity, patient outcomes and engagement. This will require a change in how we think about data transparency, leadership and empowerment. Not straight forward, but definitely achievable. Read more in a new article I am delighted to have co-authored with Ben Horner and Cassandra Yong in the Health Service Journal. #bcg #healthare #workforce #hospitals #nhs #productivity #hsj https://lnkd.in/eguTSv4g

Despite a 20% increase in NHS staff since 2019, acute activity has declined, mirroring global #healthcare trends. To address this, we must shift focus from mere workforce numbers to supporting our staff in achieving sustained improvements in activity, patient outcomes, and engagement. This shift requires a new approach to data transparency, leadership, and empowerment. Though challenging, it is achievable and essential for a sustainable health care future. A majority of physicians and advanced practitioners are choosing to work locum tenens primarily to improve their working conditions and address feelings of burnout. Burnout among physicians and APPs may be driven by inflexible schedules but also by the high volume of non-clinical bureaucratic functions they are obliged to perform—physicians indicated they spend 23% of their time on non-clinical paperwork, identifying inefficient electronic health records (EHR) systems and paperwork requirements as primary job frustrations. Those who work locum tenens also must perform paperwork duties such tracking patient conditions and notating the services they provide, but the level of bureaucratic work required of them generally is less than that required of providers in permanent positions. How is your organization addressing Physician burnout? Discover further insights into the experiences, perspectives, and demographics of physicians and advanced practitioners working locum tenens in our 2024 survey: https://brnw.ch/21wKi2y #healthcare #talentacquisition #talentmanagement #sourcing #talentsourcing #AMNHealthcare #LocumTenens #Consulting

Forecasts suggest that by 2036, NHS staff shortages could be higher than 570,000, partly as a consequence of an ageing workforce. Prior BSI research notes, “many healthcare systems were understaffed before the pandemic. Ageing populations with multiple chronic conditions inexorably raise demand." Given the pressures on those working in the healthcare sector, especially in the aftermath of Covid-19, it is no surprise that for a successful age-diverse workforce, survey respondents highlighted investment in healthcare delivery and the ability for people to maintain physical health and psychological and mental well-being. This, along with flexibility in working structures and around caring responsibilities, is of clear importance. Our report outlines long-term priorities for healthcare professionals so that all can succeed in an age-diverse workforce:https://gag.gl/zUJB2N #FutureofWork #Wellbeing #AgeDiversity #DiversityAndInclusion
