I liaise between Coretext and GRDC, write and edit stories for Ground Cover, and wrangle other stories and content for the magazine to make sure we meet deadlines.  • How long have you worked at Coretext?   Five years  • Best aspect of your job?   Dealing with all the people involved in Ground Cover – some of the best science and agriculture writers in Australia, growers, researchers, people passionate about the grains industry. And seeing the magazine in print!  • Tell us about the photo you’ve provided.  This was on a camping holiday on Lady Musgrave Island last year, where we saw turtles laying eggs as well as the hatchlings scurrying down to the water. And the snorkelling was incredible.   • Where were you born?    Melbourne / Naarm  • What are the best things about where you live now?   I’m in Townsville now, and it’s so different from where I have been living for the past 20 years or so: warm, a bit wild, tropical, with lots of potential outdoor adventures on my doorstep. It makes a huge change from spending two years in lockdown in a Melbourne apartment.  • If you weren’t doing your job what would you be doing?   Swimming somewhere, or cooking up something tasty.  • What’s the smartest thing you’ve been told?   “This too shall pass.”  • The weirdest thing I’ve eaten is: Deep-fried crickets in Bangkok. Crunchy  • Invention I’d like to see created: Any equally-rapid alternative to the airplane.  • The country I’d most like to visit is: India. My great-great-grandmother was Indian.  • In life it’s important to: Be kind, and put yourself in the other person’s shoes 

Over the past few months, I've shared a series of posts on Mongabay's 2030 roadmap. Here's a recap of some of the key points: What is Mongabay? Mongabay is a nonprofit, independent media organization that focuses on issues at the intersection of people and nature. We collaborate with journalists worldwide to highlight stories about threats to our planet, such as climate change, habitat loss, and other significant crises. We believe in free access to information. Therefore, we offer our news in various languages and formats. Our goal is to show how our ecosystems are being damaged, and what this means for people worldwide. In doing so, we’re able to empower people with trustworthy information and expose those causing the harm. Our 2030 Strategic Plan (https://lnkd.in/eUeW3ve4) In early 2023 we finalized a plan to scale our impact through 2030. This plan, developed with a diverse range of perspectives, explains our approach to achieve our mission and make a tangible difference in the world. Mongabay aims to: 1️⃣ Expand Coverage: Delve into a broader range of topics and regions, emphasizing underreported stories with potential for significant impact. Key areas for expansion include: 🌳 Africa 🌳 Toxics/Pollution 🌳 Non-news educational content 2️⃣ Deepen Reader Engagement: We aim to build strong relationships with our audience by providing quality content, reaching new groups, and staying competitive. This effort includes: 🌳 Investing in new distribution channels and engagement strategies. 🌳 Valuing the quality of engagement over sheer reach. 🌳 Launching services tailored for those typically overlooked in environmental news coverage. 3️⃣ Ensure Financial Stability: Diversify our funding streams to ensure organizational growth and agility in response to evolving circumstances. 4️⃣ Prioritize Safety: We will promote a safe working environment by acknowledging and managing risks, teaching staff how to minimize dangers, and enhancing our safety procedures. 5️⃣ Support and grow our network of journalists: Elevate the capabilities of both our present and future journalists, readying them for emerging challenges. This includes: 🌳 Implementing capacity-building initiatives like paid fellowships. 🌳 Identifying more professional growth opportunities for our team and contributors. 🌳 Producing more training tools and resources for journalists. Meet our Lendo Norway colleague Beenish Iftikhar, working as a Head of Product and Insight in Oslo. In this short interview she shares her journey starting at Lendo Norge six years back. Beenish, tell us your story in Lendo and what you do on a daily basis?  - I joined Lendo in Oslo exactly six years ago. We were a small team of passionate people that I am super happy to see grow. I feel so blessed to have been part of Lendo’s journey of growth and have learned so much over the years. When I started I dove deep into every area of the business and set up the insights function for Lendo Norway from scratch. I love that we have built a data driven culture and people can have data and insights easily available to them enabling them to make informed decisions. I now head both Product and Insight and am excited to build the future of Lendo through new products, while growing and continuously improving what is our core. What do you like most about your role? - My favourite part of the job is definitely the people that I work with. I particularly enjoy working with my team that I think are amazing talented people that challenge me to grow every day. I also love that I get to learn a new thing every day. Building meaningful insights has allowed me to learn about all parts of the business and I continue to get challenged by new things. How would you describe the Lendo team in Norway?  - I think the Lendo team in Norway is a formidable force. They are extremely smart, motivated and passionate people. They are not afraid to challenge and express their opinions. They are pushing and expanding boundaries everyday. At the same time I think the best part is that they are empathetic and kind people that want to grow and #WinAsATeam. They are always keen to help, and truly care about building the best solution from the customer point of view while growing the success of our partners and the company itself.  It is an honour and a privilege to work with them everyday. What's your favourite thing about Oslo? - I am originally from a big and very populous city and so Oslo was a little different for me. What I really love about Oslo is that it manages to be a fun cosmopolitan city without being overwhelming and isolating as big cities tend to be. The fact that you can still find nature so close to the hustle and bustle of the city is so refreshing. Too experienced for your current role? Angry? Resentful? Rubbing colleagues up the wrong way? In creative industries such as TV production, your reputation is super important. What people say about you when you’re not in the room affects what jobs you are or are not offered. My client,a seasoned executive in her fifties, now serving on the front line of TV production, was struggling. “A while back, I was a commissioning editor and head of department. These days, most of the work that comes my way is as a producer, or series editor. This means I am quite a bit older and more experienced than most of my colleagues, including the company bosses, execs and commissioning editors. The work itself isn’t that challenging, in fact I enjoy it, but managing the interpersonal dynamics was doing my head in. I was constantly holding myself back out of fear of seeming like a know it all, and trying (often unsuccessfully) to manage my anger and frustration which surfaced dramatically when a manager gave dumb notes on an edit or asked me to meet what I knew were unrealistic deadlines. I was getting a reputation as “that difficult, angry producer.” Since hiring Remy Blumenfeld as my coach, with his help, I have managed to subtly turn things around in ways that just did not seem ossible before. I have a new daily practice of reminding myself of all the things I am grateful for, including having paid work in this arid time for our industry. I’ve been supportive and mentoring towards junior colleagues, while making sure they get the credit. I’ve been reaching out to my younger bosses for their advice and guidance (something that would’ve been unthinkable to me just a few weeks ago.) I even wrote a note apologising to a few of the “skeletons in my closet “– former colleagues, with whom I knew I had been unreasonable and unprofessional. Instead of me being bossy and confrontational, Remy has shown me ways to offer up my experience lightly - suggesting ways forward as possibilities rather than directives. As a result, I’ve begun to feel I’ve had more influence on the editorial direction of the projects I’ve been working on. Recently when a gig ended, all my colleagues thanked me for being such a friendly, collaborative team-mate. My boss even gave me fun gift. By writing about it yourself, you will learn SO SO much, and will quickly become a go-to person. LinkedIn is perfect for you, and you’ll quickly meet the people who can offer you a job directly. I'm still sick today, But I don't feel like being sarcastic or witty this time. As a 1News/TVNZ reporter, I feel today's news about Newshub is worth talking about. Something I've quickly learned in my young career is that every person in the newsroom, from interns to big-shot presenters to high-profile guests, are real people. I know it sounds obvious, but its not until you sit and talk with big names like John Campbell or Jessica Mutch-McKay that you truly realise they're just as imperfect as you are. Today at Newshub, about 200 real people got terrible news about their future in news media. I've never worked there, but I know several people on that side of the fence, including friends who only just started there, and my love goes out to them right now. From a more macro perspective, this isn't just a terrible day for all the talented people in Newshub's walls - it's a bad day for Kiwi journalism. Come July, 1News will be the only major televised news programme in the country. None of my 1News colleagues want this monopoly. Competition is healthy, Newshub pushes our team to do better and vice-versa. With only one source of TV news, so many angles and stories will be overlooked. Whether you love or despise them, it should be universally agreed upon that the public is better informed when there's more sources of information. I'm wishing the best for all those affected by today's news, and hope you can all find ways to keep telling great stories and making a difference in this world. 💜

This change could revolutionize the way aspiring writers, myself included, engage with platforms such as Paramount+. I am an aspiring writer, deeply passionate about creating content that resonates with audiences worldwide. My project, “SOUTH PARK: THE LITTLE MOUNTAIN SHOW!”, is an example of the unique and innovative ideas waiting to be explored. However, the current unsolicited pitch policies act as a significant barrier, limiting the flow of creative concepts to major studios and streaming platforms. Abolishing these policies can be a game-changer. It would not only democratize the process of content creation but also ensure that a wider array of voices and stories are heard. This isn’t just about providing opportunities for writers like me; it’s about enriching our cultural landscape with diverse narratives that reflect the world we live in. By opening doors to unsolicited pitches, companies can tap into a wellspring of creativity that has been largely untapped due to existing policies. This move can lead to discovering groundbreaking content that could set new trends in the industry. The potential benefits of this policy change extend beyond the discovery of new talent. It represents a fundamental shift in how the entertainment industry operates, fostering a more inclusive and dynamic environment. By encouraging submissions from a broader range of creators, companies can stay ahead of the curve, adapting to changing audience demands and preferences. Moreover, this approach aligns perfectly with the ethos of the digital age, where barriers to entry are lowered, and collaboration and innovation take center stage. It would enable streaming platforms to not only lead in content creation but also in nurturing a community of diverse and talented creators. In conclusion, it’s time for industry giants to reassess their approach to content sourcing. Let’s say yes to abolishing the unsolicited pitch policy, breaking barriers, and shining a spotlight on those who have been waiting in the wings.
