Well, after nine years of dodging redundancies in digital media, it finally caught up with me. Along with the rest of the Refinery29 Australia team and many of our colleagues at Pedestrian Group, I was let go yesterday. Refinery29's launch in Australia filled a crucial gap in the local market and gave voice to some of the most underrepresented communities in the country, and the feedback we've consistently received from contributors, creators, and peers in the industry remains true: it meant something. R29 Australia's closure doesn't diminish its impact; local traffic consistently surpassed 1 million monthly page views, and on TikTok and Instagram, a combined 38K-strong audience lapped up our content every day. It’s proof that leading with heart and passion works. Taking over Kate McGregor’s post as Managing Editor at the end of 2022 on a maternity cover contract was a career-defining moment for me. But I’m especially grateful to have gotten to know her as a steady and hilarious leader since stepping into my dream gig as the Senior Style and Beauty Editor upon her return this year. Being Zahra C.'s right-hand woman has made the past 18 months some of the most educational of my career; her knowledge of audience development and knack for authentic storytelling are so inspiring. If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of Z’s creativity and unwavering support, you get it. The team is what makes a workplace so special, and this was one of the best. Alexandra Koster, one of the most passionate people I’ve ever worked with; Allie Daisy King, our chronically online internet correspondent; and the extended R29 family — our contributors and past editors (Alicia Vrajlal, Maggie Zhou and Phoebe McIlwraith, I’m looking at you), it was an honour to work with you. To my Pedestrian Group colleagues. I never expected that a mid-pandemic coffee catch-up with Vanessa Lawrence would lead to an almost four-year (on and off) ride, but I'm so glad it did. They must pump magic dust into the air conditioning at 66 Wentworth, because the people working on level one are some of the most clever and creative and funny people I’ve ever worked with. There’s a reason we all come back again and again — it was rare and we knew it. As for me, I’m officially open to any opportunities where my skills might align (freelance, permanent, or contracts), and suddenly have plenty of time on my hands for calls and coffee catch-ups. You're one of the greats mate, no doubt we'll eventually work together for a third time!
I'm so sorry Ange. It's a real loss for diverse, young voices and I have no doubt your amazing skillset will be snapped up soon.
I am just so sorry to hear this . Been so amazing working with you at the title but excited to see the next chapter for you x
What you guys did with R29 was like nothing else 💔
In the same boat :( Thinking of you! They say you haven't worked in media if you haven't been made redundant, not sure it's particularly comforting haha.
I’m so sorry, Angela. It’s been a pleasure watching your journey with R29 from afar and I’m sure there’s something amazing on the other side (although I know firsthand how much this part sucks). Hope we can connect soon, would love to catch up 💞
You are the poster girl for heart and passion my friend. One day soon you’ll see this NO as projecting you to your Next Opportunity, and until then I know this bar that does great negronis in a can 💕
You absolutely smashed it. It’s been so incredible working with you ❤️

1moThis makes me so sad but you and the entire team should be so proud of everything you’ve accomplished.
