Designing for multi-generational living is not top of mind with our zoning and building officials. I would argue most other cultures in the world allow for multiple units and flexibility on ones lot or parcel to add living space for family members. Land use in the United States, all typically based on lot site needs to evolve to allow for more density. While changes are happening finally with ADUs nationwide, it’s not happening fast enough and water/sewer taps should continue to be reduced to allow for affordable accessory living spaces. While our American culture is not really adept to living with our families long-term, ADUs or multi-generational designed homes with privacy and access to common spaces will be more and more important to providing affordable living solutions.
