Did you know that in the 1960s, airlines introduced "all-you-can-fly" tickets as a novel way to boost passenger numbers? This scheme allowed passengers to travel unlimitedly for a fixed price within a certain period. As expected, these tickets eventually fell out of favor as airlines noticed the financial downsides. Frequent flyers using these passes heavily impacted profitability. As a result, airlines shifted towards more sustainable loyalty programs that rewarded frequent flyers without sacrificing revenue, leading to the sophisticated mileage-based programs we see today.

Revenue & Profits are the point of having airlines. As long as rewards programs serve those two things, they will stay as presently designed. Each individual airline controls their respective program & can unilaterally make changes. The end of 2023 may go down as the final days of the mileage run, travel hackers’ annual scramble to fly enough miles at year’s end to clinch elite status on airlines. Airlines now want to reward customers for the amount of money they spend, rather than the miles or legs they fly, making the road-warrior tradition all but pointless.
