I had a good time with this one! From Madonna, MJ, Elton John, to solo stardum, hit-making to environmental advocacy. Legendary producer-songwriter Patrick Leonard gave me an earful of insider stories. And y'all know I love a good story! Check out the latest episode of Stumptown Soundcheck to hear my interview with music policy expert and author Shain Shapiro! If you have 30 minutes and want a sneak peek into why the hell I'm always talking about music stuff, this is the episode.
I'm a big fan of the work being done in Portland - including with MusicPortland (who had me in town for my book). This made it extra special that local music policy expert Jamie Dunphy (and city council candidate) had me on his podcast, Stumptown Soundcheck. A lot is going on in Portland (and Oregon in general) that's worth exploring... https://lnkd.in/gnJES4DD

Do you dare to take on the giant in your field? Thomas Bangalter is one of the founders of Daft Punk. One of my favorite bands. (they don't do music anymore). But he does. Classical stuff. He is trying to make music that is better than Mozart. That takes some bravery. But he is doing it. How about you and me? Are we trying to be even better than the giant in our field? If not, why are we even doing stuff at all? ps. you can listen to tasty thoughts like this in the Authentic Content Podcast

Podcast 'R' Us. Suddenly. A few weeks ago I wrote (and posted here) a piece for The Robin Report on the power of podcasting, as both a new brand vehicle and a business growth approach. I spent time in the piece outlining the new rules of engagement for brands in the world of social media, e.g., content in fresh context. So far. So good. THEN, I was approached by my friend, colleague and actress (you'll know her from Law & Order and scores of other police procedurals -- female cop, just the facts, ma'am, as well as most recently a rich bitch in Inventing Anna). Traci Godfrey. She and her crew have started a podcast called 'Healing the Division' with a vision to understand how to bridge the political, social and cultural divide in our country. Those of us who see first-hand how tough it is for brands to wither the polarizing backlash against issues requiring a once commonplace tolerance face this challenge routinely. The goal of the podcast is not to convert one side to the other, but rather find a safe space to find new -- gentler -- pathways through anger. She asked me to be a guest on one of the editions and then to serve as co-host on two others. Net-net, it's been a blast. So thrilling, really, to engage on how we may speak respectfully with those with whom we do not agree as they thoughtfully share their perspectives. The goal: We can hear and learn from fresh perspectives, not shouts. We can't get all the way to 'healing' in a heartbeat, or even in four podcasts, but I hope you'll take a listen. The most recent release features Sophie B. Hawkins, singer-songwriter-performer-poet-mother-entrepreneur. https://lnkd.in/eFJum7mf

We recently received the music from Brian de Palma's "Phantom of the Paradise". What we didn't realize until later was that the themes the main character struggles with mirror the very same experience that the composer/songwriter Paul Williams had also struggled with, throughout his career his career: https://lnkd.in/gd9dF8Er
