Great discussion a few days ago at the University of Ottawa regarding Safe Sport, Values, and the Athlete-Centered Model. Some of the main takeaways for me were:
1. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. While hard work, mental toughness, pressure and others alike are all essential for performance, they can also reach an inflection point and be detrimental to athlete health and well-being.
2. Maltreatment in sport is a complex issue. Does too much organizational pressure on coaches manifest itself as maltreatment somewhere down the road?
3. The athlete-centered model must continue to develop in order for athletes to provide meaningful contributions and inputs to their NSO's. Athlete's sitting at the table bring invaluable knowledge that only they can provide.
4. Values. This word is thrown around a lot, maybe too much. Values are at the core of how we conduct ourselves and interact with others. Culture change takes time and policy is not enough to turn a ship around. When all is said and done, genuine interactions between individuals all striving for a common goal is what will determine the direction of culture in an organization.
Fantastic atmosphere yesterday at the Safe Sport: It’s Everyone’s Business event!
Surrounded by individuals from the sport community determined to make sport safer, our team was grateful to be part of this gathering and contribute to the worthwhile conversations.
Special thanks to Eric MacIntosh for organizing this event and giving SDRCC’s CEO, Marie-Claude Asselin, the opportunity to lead an informative workshop on the topic of jurisdiction and alignment in the safe sport context.
