LoL Worlds Finals not only achieved unprecedented success with over 6 million peak viewers but also established new milestones for Korean, English, and Vietnamese language viewership in esports. Korean viewership, 2M Peak Viewers, now secures the third spot globally, following Indonesian (2.8 million) and Chinese (tens of millions) audiences. This event also updated viewer records on platforms like AfreecaTV and YouTube (in LoL). While the triumph of LoL doesn't guarantee a smooth journey for all of esports, it undeniably highlights the growing popularity of #LCK and signals a recovery for the #VCS (Vietnam) audience after the pandemic. Crucially, among the multitude of esports disciplines (over 50), only some show positive YoY growth in viewership (2023 vs. 2022/2021). Games like #LoL, #MLBB, #StreetFighter, #AoV, #RocketLeague, and #Fortnite (excluding the initial hype in the first 2 years) are witnessing growth. Also, for some of these games, growth is not the same in all regions but is associated with unique phenomena. ❗ Once again, in #Worlds2023, only 3 languages out of 21 updated viewership records. (maybe the 4th is Chinese) The infographic below explores how tournaments with millions of viewers also have non-million metrics related to audience and sponsors. I'm not implying that some numbers are insignificant; such statistics are thoroughly analyzed compared to other events. However, it's crucial to not only assess overall metrics but also delve into details such as languages, platforms, the popularity of matches in the morning or evening, and the growth of community casting.

#LCK is a massive esports viewership phenomenon on many levels. That includes an impressive scale of international broadcasts beyond English coverage. In Q1 2024, the LCK Vietnamese channel ranked top 3 by Hours Watched among all esports channels on YouTube. It even outperformed PGL's channel broadcasting the CS2 major and offline qualifiers for it. And the 2 channels outdoing LCK Vietnam? The regional giant MPL Indonesia and the native LCK coverage in Korean. Time and again, Korean teams are a massive draw at international League of Legends events as well. T1 Entertainment & Sports were part of the historic 6.4M viewership peak at the 2023 World Championship. T1 have also just peaked at over 1.5M viewers on Day 1 of the 2024 Mid-Season Invitational's play-ins, with the main event concluding on May 19. Between T1 and Gen.G, we may see some impressive viewership milestones for non-crowning events of the #esports calendar.

Two events in one weekend: I'll be at Esports Insider and BLAST in London this weekend, meeting awesome people that also push esports forward! Since my return to esports in 2019, both BLAST and Esports Insider has been a constant presence, always delivering world class events and opportunities for all stakeholders of the industry to meet up and discuss ideas and projects, that will keep up the momentum of esports as a whole. On my mind lately is how we forge strong partnerships and common understanding across the entire industry, and the constant need for education of leaders and operators to build sustainable growth and companies that will last and evolve over the next decades. We need the grassroots activated and united, building proper bridges that lead to long lasting careers both on and off the server, while utilizing the amazing momentum the top tier event and experiences are delivering. Esports have massive potential, and we are just only beginning to see the signs that we will indeed penetrate the mainstream media and sports audience on a huge scale. With the many changes upcoming for 2025 in the circuit and Esports World Cup Foundation, World Cup coming up, International Esports Federation making steady progress towards common ground, I can think of no better time getting together with people, before we do all it again in August in Riyadh. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the biggest stories this past week; 1️⃣ Two huge moves coming from the team at BLAST; 🤝 Firstly, they have just announced Revolut will be joining them as Presenting Partner for their Spring Final in London this June. ⚔ Secondly, BLAST have also announced their expansion into Dota 2, with ‘BLAST Slam’ – due to commence at the end of this year and running through 2025. 2️⃣ Logitech G have announced a multi-year partnership with German esports organisation; Berlin International Gaming | BIG. The partnership will support Logitech G’s offline and activation expansion; which will ultimately be supported by the players and teams within BIG. 3️⃣ Barns have made a tremendous, strategic entrance into the esports scene.
