I just read about a recent Gallup study around employee engagement. Albeit this particular study was done in the US, but from my experience there are practical learnings for Canadian employers too. (Read more here: In New Workplace, U.S. Employee Engagement Stagnates (gallup.com)) According to this study, employee engagement has stagnated at 33%, which has continued to slightly decline each year since 2020. We know that lack of employee engagement shows up in very tangible ways. Engaged employees are more productive and more creative problem solvers, they are more willing to help a team member and more willing to put in some extra time and/or take on an additional project. Engaged employees bring positivity and energy to the work environment. Employee engagement matters! I find it interesting that Gallup has repeatedly shown that a key element of employee engagement is employees knowing what is expected of them at work. In some ways that is so surprising, because it feels so obvious. Of course, leaders want their employees to know what they are doing! In other ways, as leaders, how often are we more focused on what we think are the “bigger picture” strategies or the fires we have to manage than ensuring each person on our team knows what is expected of them at work? Or how often do we think smart people will just know what to do? I know that feeling of having a one on one with someone who appears to be struggling, and through conversation, I realize “Ugh. This situation is largely on me. I have not been clear about expectations and making sure this person has what they need to be successful.” Here are some questions to ask yourself: 1. Do each of your employees have clear expectations about their role and what they are accountable for? 2. Does each person have the tools to do their role and know what support looks like? 3. Can each member on the team clearly define a “win” for the work that they do? If the answer to any of these questions is “no” for any of your employees, what is your next step? If you don’t know the answers to these questions for each employee, why don’t you ask them? If you need support in bringing clarity to employees and/or conducting an employee engagement survey please reach out to me at katie@double-consulting.ca.

Proper communication and collaboration are going to continue behind some of the most innovative organizations out there today, especially those looking to enhance their human resource strategy. How to implement such a thing for your own business? Feedback. You need to ask those around you for it at any chance you can because at the end of the day, it’s going to be the constructive criticism from each of your employees that sparks your organization’s new employee retention strategy. After all, not all businesses have the same needs. Your company needs a personalized strategy. Gallup is a trusted global analytics and consulting firm and one of my favorite places to go for workplace data. They just released their 2024 State of the Global Workplace Report. If you play a role in the people strategy at your organization, check out their key insights report. It covers topics like wellbeing, manager influence, employee engagement, etc. It is a good reminder that you don't build an organization - you build people - and then people build the organization. #peoplemattermost #gallup #workplace #research
